Handover: Jordan Henderson is growing into the Liverpool captaincy (Picture: Getty)

Liverpool fans were left distraught by Steven Gerrard’s decision to leave Anfield at the end of the season – but it appears that the Reds have a more-than capable deputy waiting in the wings.

Jordan Henderson was installed as Liverpool vice-captain in September 2014, and while some fans were unsure about the decision, it seems that the ex-Sunderland man might just be able to handle taking Gerrard’s armband.

With Gerrard playing fewer games this season due to injury and Brendan Rodgers looking to manage his game-time, Henderson has started as Liverpool captain on a number of occasions – and his record when doing so is extremely impressive.

In the 12 games Liverpool have played under Henderson’s captaincy, they’ve won nine – against Swansea (twice), Stoke, Aston Villa, West Ham, Crystal Palace, Besiktas, Southampton and Manchester City – drawn three – against Sunderland, Everton and Bolton – and lost none.

While the 24-year-old’s ascension to full-time captain is yet to be confirmed, he’s certainly showing that he could cope if Rodgers comes calling with the armband.
