Breel Embolo and 5 Transfer Targets for Tottenham Fans to Watch During Euro 2016

If they are to genuinely compete in the Premier League and Champions League next season, Tottenham's squad needs quality and depth. 

Manager Mauricio Pochettino and head of recruitment Paul Mitchell have likely identified many of the club's transfer targets,  but the looming European Championship gives players an opportunity to present their case for a move to Spurs. 

Nuno Gomes scored four times for Portugal at Euro 2000, earning him a move to Fiorentina. 

Bayern Munich snapped up Croatian forward Mario Mandzukic after he finished equal top scorer in the 2012 edition of the tournament. 

Tottenham's acquisition of Roman Pavlyuchenko and Arsenal's purchase of his Russian teammate Andrey Arshavin were also prompted by star showings at Euro 2008. 

Spurs fans will already be focused on the Euros as 11 of their players take part, but the presence of a number of intriguing transfer targets should pique their interests further. 

According to the Telegraph's Matt Law, Basel striker Breel Embolo has been linked to a move to north London this summer, and Switzerland's relatively kind draw should give him several chances to impress. 

The Swiss face Romania and Albania, as well as hosts France, and Embolo is a likely starter. 

Despite his youth—he's still only 19—Embolo is physically mature. Big, strong and fast, Embolo provides a cutting edge for Switzerland's attractive build-up play and has developed a particular understanding with their full-backs.

Spurs desperately need a back-up for Harry Kane and Embolo fits the bill.

Another reported option for Tottenham at centre-forward is Southampton's Irish striker Shane Long. 

According to Alex Crook of the Mirror, Long was among the players Pochettino was scouting when he attended Ireland's warm-up match against the Netherlands last week. 

Long is an odd player for Spurs to pursue. 

The 29-year-old has been something of a journeyman in his 11-year professional career to date. While reasonably reliable in front of goal, having scored exactly 100 goals in 380 games as a pro, Long has never been prolific.

He was useful for Southampton last season as they finished an encouraging sixth and appears to be growing as a player in recent years. 

If Pochettino wants him, he's probably better than he appears, and it could be a matter of Long's tactical nous that has caught the Argentinian's eye. 

For the majority of the Premier League season, Tottenham had the best defence. While they let that title slip in the final weeks, eventually finishing level best with Manchester United, it is fair to say that it is the strongest part of their squad. 

Even so, Croatia right-back Sime Vrsaljko is reportedly a Spurs target (according to Italian reports via EatSleepSport).  

Vrsaljko has the technical proficiency, high energy levels and tactical flexibility that Pochettino craves. He can play across the back line and in midfield and, playing for Serie A minnows Sassuolo, is an attainable target. 

His international teammate Ante Coric has also been heavily linked to Tottenham. Simon Jones of the Daily Mail was one of a number of sources to suggest this move in May and, given the club's previous success with diminutive Croatian playmakers, it is a tantalising rumour. 

The Dinamo Zagreb midfielder is still just 19 and an unlikely starter in France, but he should get a few chances in a very tough group featuring Spain, Czech Republic and Turkey. 

The final man on the our list of Tottenham transfer targets to watch during Euro 2016 is Lyon's Samuel Umtiti, a player with whom Spurs have been regularly linked in recent months. 

Umtiti is another versatile defender but something of a rough diamond compared to the more polished Vrsaljko. 

He was only added to France's squad after a spate of injuries and remains uncapped at full international level despite 47 youth international appearances. 

If Umtiti does get on the pitch in France, his ability to deal with the pressure of playing for the hosts and tournament favourites will shine a light on his mental strength. Should he perform well, Spurs will need to move quickly to secure his signature.
