Chelsea defender Gary Cahill has admitted that the squad lost their way under Jose Mourinho last season.

The Blues were 16th at Christmas, less than a year after winning the Premier League at a canter under the Portuguese the season before.

Despite recovering to finish tenth by May, the Londoners’ performances were below par throughout the campaign.

‘We needed organisation. We went from winning the league to the disaster of last season. We lost our way tactically; everyone’s head was in different directions,’ the centre-back told BBC Radio Five Live.

‘Everyone had different situations going on, whether you’re playing or not, the manager, or this or that. Different distractions are never healthy.

‘It is the hardest thing when everyone is not on the same wavelength. People talk as if you wake up one day and suddenly you’re a bog-standard player. It doesn’t happen.’

Cahill will hope that new manager Antonio Conte is able to turn things around this season.

The signs are promising after the Italian guided them to three wins in the first three matches, and he also appears to have coaxed Eden Hazard back in to form.
