Former Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas believes it is crucial for his old club to finally finish above north London rivals Arsenal this season.

Spurs haven’t managed a higher finish than their neighbours since all the way back in the 1994/95 season, when they finished 7th and Arsenal 12th.

For much of the Premier League era Arsenal have been well ahead of Tottenham, but in recent times they’ve been run very close by their rivals, only overtaking them on the final day of last season to finish second.

Jenas admits it is a problem for Spurs, who have had to cope with being in Arsenal’s shadow for so long and who seem to suffer an inferiority complex against them.

Responding to a fan on BT Sport this evening, Jenas agreed that even if Tottenham don’t win anything this season, it would be a big step for them to at least get one over the Gunners.

‘It’s a mindset that they need to put to bed,’ he said.

‘Even after the title run they had (last year) they lost it on the last day of the season. It’s always been a big thing.’
