Jonathan Woodgate has rejoined hometown club Middlesbrough as first-team coach.

The former England defender replaces Carlos Cachada in the latest backroom change to follow Aitor Karanka's sacking and Steve Agnew's appointment as head coach.

Agnew has already brought in Joe Jordan and Paul Jenkins, and now Woodgate is back at the Riverside, where he had two spells as a player before his 2016 retirement.

"Jonathan is someone who we know very well, and who in turn knows this club inside and out," Agnew told the club website.

"He brings a wealth of experience from the highest level of the game, and he's a fantastic character. We're delighted to have him on board."

Woodgate's first game as coach will be this weekend's Super Sunday trip to Swansea, who are five points ahead of second-bottom Boro.
