Fernando Torres has revealed ahead of Atletico Madrid’s Champions League quarter-final meeting with Leicester that he became a fan of the Foxes last season.

The former Liverpool and Chelsea striker was among those that got caught up in their incredible Premier League triumph.

‘We all became Leicester fans for what they did last season was amazing,’ said the Atletico Madrid striker.

‘It was one of these cases that everybody thinks they’re not going to be there to the end, they will start losing and big teams they go up.

‘But they did, they showed great character and I think we all from the outside wanted them to win the league because it’s one of these stories that everyone will remember for years and years.’

While Leicester have been unable to repeat their league form this season, they are in the midst of writing another very special chapter in the club’s history. They are the only English team remaining in the Champions League and take on Atletico Madrid seeking a place in the semi-finals of the competition.

Torres insists he and his team-mates are taking them very seriously.

‘Leicester is a team with passion and great players but above everything it is a team,’ he told the BBC.

‘They showed against Sevilla that they could do it.’

Tonight’s first-leg encounter kicks off at 7.45pm.
