Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has claimed he ‘knows for a fact’ that N’Golo Kante was keen to join Arsenal before moving to Chelsea last summer.

Kante has been a revelation at Stamford Bridge this season, after completing a £32million switch from Leicester City, and the 26-year-old Frenchman is a shoo-in to be named PFA Player of the Year.

Arsene Wenger has admitted that he has tried and failed to sign the midfielder on two occasions and Fowler has hit out at the Gunners boss for not getting a deal over the line ahead of the 2016/17 campaign.

‘He [Wenger] knows that players who should have been signed last summer weren’t, and that has cost them,’ Fowler said in his Daily Mirror column.

‘I know for a fact that N’Golo Kante wanted to go to Arsenal, Wenger wanted him, but the deal didn’t get done.

‘I’m not saying it fell through because of his wages. But it fell through because of his wages.’

Kante is 1/8 to win the PFA Player of the Year award ahead of his Chelsea team-mate Eden Hazard.
