James Milner has taken responsibility for the draw with Southampton at Anfield.

The Liverpool vice-captain was skipper in Jordan Henderson’s absence and stepped up in the second half to take a crucial penalty.

Milner had taken and scored every one of Liverpool’s seven penalties this season, but was horrified to see Fraser Forster push away his effort.

Liverpool struggled to create chances throughout the 90 minutes and eventually stumbled to a 0-0 draw.

‘It’s very frustrating,’ he said.

‘Obviously the penalty is my fault and the fact we didn’t get three points is definitely my fault.

‘I have to live with that. Fraser is a top keeper. You have to take those chances.’

Forster was talking to Milner before the penalty was taken in an effort to unnerve the experienced midfielder.

But Milner insisted he was not put off by the goalkeeper’s tactics.

‘I’ve been around long enough to make sure that doesn’t worry me,’ said Milner.

‘I can’t do any more than hold my hands up. Southampton are a tough team to break down.

‘We didn’t play as well as we would have liked.

‘The penalty was a big chance and we didn’t take it. We have to win our remaining two games and see if it’s good enough.

The result hands the initiative back to Manchester United in the race for a Champions League spot.

United can now leap frog Liverpool should they beat Arsenal on Sunday and win their game in hand over the Merseysiders.
