Hull City have been relegated from the Premier League after a disastrous performance in their must-win game against Crystal Palace.

The Tigers lost 4-0 at Selhurst Park, a result that means they join Sunderland and Middlesbrough in dropping to the Championship.

The afternoon started terribly for Marco Silva’s side when just three minutes into the match Andrea Ranocchia made a complete mess of trying to clear the ball which allowed Wilfried Zaha to get in one-on-one before slotting the ball into the back of the net.

The home side were 2-0 up 34 minutes into the contest when Christian Benteke was allowed a free run at a corner which he took full advantage of to rise up and head in from close range.

The result was confirmed when Luka Milivojevic scored a penalty in the 85th minute. The spot-kick was awarded when Micheal Dawson blatantly fouled Jeffery Schlupp as he raced into the box.

Dawson managed to make another mistake before the match was over, hesitating after a poor clearance which allowed Patrick Van Aanholt to put a shine on the result.

The defeat means an immediate return to the second tier for last season’s Championship Play-Off winners.

After a surprisingly good start to the season which followed a tumultuous summer that saw Steve Bruce leave the club, Mike Phelan was sacked at the start of January. It came after nearly two months without a win.

Silva proved an excellent replacement with results vastly improved. But having arrived with the club bottom of the table it proved too much of a task to escape the relegation zone.

The club will now turn their focus to trying to keep Silva at the club with the former Olympiakos and Sporting Lisbon manager’s current deal expiring at the end of the season. Hull’s made their wishes clear in south London with chants of ‘we want you to stay’ coming from the away end.
