Liverpool are on the cusp of Champions League qualification – beat Middlesbrough on the final day of the season and they’ve done it.

So what could possibly go wrong at Anfield this weekend?

We’ve put aside the fact Middlesbrough are already relegated and that have an away record since early December that reads: Played 11, Won 0, Drawn 2, Lost 9. We’re also working on the basis Arsenal will pick up the necessary win over Everton that they need to leapfrog Jurgen Klopp’s team.

Call us pessimists for thinking Liverpool could blow it. Or, if you want Arsenal to qualify, read on and fill yourself with hope that it could still happen.

1. Liverpool love drawing

They’ve done so 10 times already this season – the most of any side in the top six. Only three sides in the division have drawn more. The two most recent were against Southampton and Bournemouth.

2. Record vs Middlesbrough

The last time they played Middlesbrough at Anfield – in the EFL Cup back in September 2014 – it ended all square at 2-2 (before Liverpool won 14-13 on penalties).

When they met earlier in the season Liverpool comfortably won 3-0 – but for the purposes of this article we’ll overlook that.

3. Final day woes

Liverpool’s record over the last few years on the final day of the season won’t exactly fill them with confidence. They’ve won only twice in the last seven seasons, which includes that shocking 6-1 defeat to Stoke a couple of years ago.

Finale fortune

2015/16 – DREW 1-1 with West Brom

2014/15 – LOST 6-1 to Stoke

2013/14 – WON 2-1 against Newcastle

2012/13 – WON 1-0 against QPR

2011/12 – LOST 1-0 to Liverpool

2010/11 – LOST 1-0 to Aston Villa

2009/10 – DREW 0-0 with Hull

4. Bottlers?

So far under Jurgen Klopp when it’s really mattered Liverpool have failed to deliver. Last season they lost both the EFL Cup final (on penalties to Man City) and the Europa League final (3-1 to Sevilla). Once again they must get a result (assuming Arsenal beat Everton) – can they hold their nerve?

5. Squeaky bum time

Middlesbrough like to keep things tight – they have the best defensive record of the entire bottom half of the Premier League table. It’s seen them concede an average of just 1.35 goals per match. That’s probably not the ideal team to be facing when a draw isn’t enough.

6. Because Arsenal always finish fourth

Since Arsene Wenger took charge of the Gunners back in the 18th century Arsenal have never failed to qualify for the Champions League. They always finish in the top four – and by definition that means Liverpool slipping up.
