Manchester United fans have nominated five players to be sold by Jose Mourinho this summer to make room for reinforcements.

In a poll conducted by MEN Sport, Adnan Januzaj was the player most wanted to see head for the exit door after a disappointing loan at Sunderland.

Just 14.9% of respondents voted to keep the Belgian, who has one year remaining on his United contract.

Wayne Rooney has also fallen out of favour, with just 17.7% voting for his Old Trafford future to be extended beyond the summer.

The skipper saw his game-time vastly reduced during the course of 2016/17, and has been strongly linked with a move to China, while a return to boyhood club Everton has also been mentioned.

With United set to bring in a new centre back this summer, a departure among the current defensive ranks is also to be expected.

And fans have made their feelings clear, with 61.5% of respondents suggesting Chris Smalling should be the man to make way.

The England defender started the Europa League final alongside Daley Blind, but more fans would prefer to keep Phil Jones, with 56.3% voting to keep the former Blackburn Rovers man.

Meanwhile, fewer than half of respondents voted for Ashley Young or Marouane Fellaini to be part of Mourinho's squad next season.

The United manager has been clear about drawing up a list of targets ahead of his second season in charge at Old Trafford and his desire to do business early.

Speaking about the summer window, he said: "Ed Woodward has my analysis, has what I want, what I would like for more than two months.

"Now it’s for him, now for the owners and the people who work with him [to sort], so I just wait."

Four signings are expected, with central defence, central midfield, a striker and a wide player the areas in need of strengthening.

The new faces will join a young squad fresh from winning the Europa League, and the majority of fans want to keep the core of the current group intact as the club enter the Champions League next season.

Marcus Rashford leads the popular vote with 98.4% wanting him to stay at Old Trafford.

The second most vital player, according to the fans, is Ander Herrera, followed by Henrikh Mkhitaryan and then Antonio Valencia.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is not due to be fit again until January, after a serious knee ligament injury ended his season prematurely. He has not signed an extension at Old Trafford and is due to be a free agent, but 58.2% would like the club to keep him next season.
