Zlatan Ibrahimovic could yet remain at Manchester United despite being released by the club, though he is unwilling to sign a new deal until he has recovered from injury.

The Swedish striker’s name appeared on the Premier League’s released list on Friday, with no word from United regarding a potential new deal for the veteran forward.

Ibrahimovic suffered an ACL injury in April that is likely to keep him sidelined until 2018 and which deprived him of the chance to play at his home stadium in Stockholm in the Europa League final.

It had been assumed that United were unwilling to offer him a new contract with so many question marks surrounding his fitness, but now The Sun say it was Ibrahimovic who made the decision.

They claim United did offer Ibrahimovic a new deal, but he did not think it was right or appropriate to take the money while he was still undergoing rehabilitation.

United have left the facilities at Carrington training ground open to the 35-year-old as he bids to bounce back from his knee ligament injury, and he could yet decide to remain at the club when he is fully recovered.

Nevertheless, United have pushed ahead with their pursuit of two new strikers this summer.

Jose Mourinho is confident of wrapping up a deal for Real Madrid forward Alvaro Morata as early as next week, while he is also pushing for a £70 million deal to sign Torino’s Andrea Belotti.
