Former Chelsea captain Marcel Desailly believes the transfer of Borussia Dortmund star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could take Antonio Conte’s side to ‘another level’.

The Gabon international has been strongly linked with a move to Stamford Bridge for around £65million, though Liverpool are also in for him after his prolific form in the Bundesliga.

Aubameyang scored 40 goals in all competitions last season, and finished as top scorer in Germany with 31 league strikes for Thomas Tuchel’s side.

With Diego Costa looking like leaving the Blues for a move back to former club Atletico Madrid, Conte is understandably keen to land a top class striker, with Aubameyang reportedly up there with Real Madrid’s Alvaro Morata as a priority target.

Speaking about the prospect of Aubameyang joining Chelsea, Desailly was excited about what this club-record deal could do for his old side.

‘Currently, Aubameyang is the only player affordable in attack for Chelsea,’ he told L’Equipe.

‘It could bring the team to another level. It is a pity that (Romelu) Lukaku did not come, it is probably because Diego Costa did not leave.

‘After that, it’s hard to pick up someone and find themselves with too many attackers.’

Chelsea had pursued Lukaku for much of the summer but were surprisingly snubbed late on by their former player as he opted instead to make the £75m transfer to Manchester United.
