Arsenal have been offered the surprise signing of Barcelona midfielder Rafinha for a transfer fee of around £27million, according to reports.

The Brazil international is currently out of his club’s pre-season squad due to injury, but may also be on his way out of the club this summer if a good enough offer comes in.

Arsenal could do with signings in midfield in this transfer window, having strengthened in defence with Sead Kolasinac and in attack with Alexandre Lacazette.

Still, they looked weak in the middle last season as Granit Xhaka failed to adapt to the Premier League after his move from Borussia Monchengladbach, while Aaron Ramsey and Francis Coquelin struggled for consistency.

Meanwhile, Jack Wilshere went out on loan and could now leave permanently, giving Arsene Wenger something of a headache in that central area.

According to Sky Sports, Rafinha could now be available as a surprise option for the Gunners, as Barca seemingly don’t see him as a key part of their plans for the new season.

The 24-year-old only started 14 La Liga matches last season, but managed a respectable seven goals and two assists in all competitions, playing in a variety of roles.

The younger brother of Bayern Munich playmaker Thiago Alcantara, Rafinha largely operates in a similar central midfield role, but can also play out wide and even at right-back or wing-back.

While Barcelona have publicly stated he is not for sale, the player himself recently suggested he could be on the move.

‘My future is open and God only knows what will happen,’ he said last month.
