Chelsea have confirmed that Gary Cahill will be taking over the captain’s armband at Stamford Bridge next season and the announcement received a mixed reaction from fans across social media.

Cahill has accepted the responsibility following John Terry’s departure from the club at the end of last term and Cesar Azpilicueta has been named vice-captain for the 2017/18 campaign.

Both Cahill and Azpilicueta filled in as skipper on a number of occasions last season, in Terry’s absence, but many supporters believe one man has been overlooked.

David Luiz was on the list of those being tipped to replace Terry as captain this summer and many criticised the club for neglecting the Brazilian centre-back.

On being handed the honour, Cahill said: ‘Thank you, yes, it’s definitely a proud moment in my career. I’ve had some good moments up until now and this certainly ranks very highly.

‘To be captain of such a huge club like Chelsea is a great personal achievement.’
