Manchester United suffered their opening defeat of pre-season last night as Barcelona held out for a 1-0 win over Jose Mourinho’s side.

Several of United’s top stars were on show at FedEx Field but Neymar’s goal in the 31st minute saw the Catalan giants come away with the victory in front of an impressive crowd.

David De Gea started the friendly and was substituted for Sergio Romero at half-time, while Ander Herrera did not feature in the Maryland clash.

Herrera, though, was seen whispering in the ear of long-term United target Jordi Alba after the final whistle before De Gea joined in the deep discussion.

Alba, who has again been linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer, embraced his two Spain team-mates as they made their way towards the tunnel.

Reports suggest the Red Devils has been weighing up a move for Alba in recent weeks, with Mourinho an avid admirer of the left-back.

‘It’s clear that, the more I play, the better,’ the Spain defender admitted earlier this summer.

‘My dream has always been to play here and stay at Barcelona for a long time.

‘We haven’t spoken about it, but a footballer always wants to play and I have not played as much as I’ve wanted to.’
