Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has aimed a little dig at Tottenham by questioning if they will manage to fill Wembley Stadium when they play their home games there this season.

Spurs are making the temporary move to the national team’s home ground as they prepare to build a new stadium of their own, having left White Hart Lane at the end of 2016/17.

Wembley has 90,000 seats, more than double the 36,284 Tottenham held at White Hart Lane, and Wenger believes it could be psychologically difficult playing in a half-empty ground.

Arsenal themselves moved from Highbury (38,419 capacity) to the Emirates Stadium (60,432) in 2006, and while attendance hasn’t generally been an issue for them, they took time to get going after settling in in a new home.

When asked about how Tottenham might have to adapt, the Frenchman suggested attendance would be the main issue for them as it’s rare to see low attendances in English football.

‘For a while you had the problem of the quality of the pitch but that does not exist anymore. Today the pitch is of a similar quality to everywhere,’ Wenger said.

‘So after that the difficultly is to fill it. It is nothing more. In England we are not used to playing with half a stadium empty.
