Arsenal: Alexandre Lacazette alone should subdue Wenger-outers

Arsenal’s transfer business has been swift and conclusive for the most part. In fact, Alexandre Lacazette by himself should be enough to see off the dissenters.

Arsenal has been the most scrutinized top-tier team of the decade. And it’s not even close. The supporters have been relentless to manager and player alike, and it’s hard to say that they aren’t justified at least somewhat.

Especially in terms of the striker situation.

As many of you know, I will stand up for Olivier Giroud no matter what. Unless he burns down an orphanage or something, but we don’t need to talk about that. I’m sure he had good reason to do it.

But leaving him completely alone as the sole striker for years without properly challenging him was a mistake and one that I think had massive consequences on the way the club developed and the way Giroud himself developed.

It was the main rallying cry of these dissenters – sign a first-class striker, which meant spending a lot of money. It was something Wenger admitted to not liking and something he wished he could get around and that’s why he kept skirting the need by trying to be sneaky sneaky with his striker signings. None of it worked.

When he signed Alexandre Lacazette for a club record fee, it was pretty much universally celebrated. I was even under the impression that this would pacify most of the dissenters because this was the big signing they had been clamoring for.

But it hasn’t. And all throughout social media, just like old times, there is dissent, and people crying out for Wenger to spend spend spend because even clubs like Everton are spend spend spending.

It’s ridiculous really. It’s like they’ve gotten into such a habit of complaining about not spending that they can’t even appreciate when he has. And not just spent, but spent on exactly what we needed.

I understand that there are more sort-of-needs that the team needs to address, but damn, can’t we be happy with what we have? And please don’t try to talk to me about the defense. Until we have our first choice defenders back and healthy, we can’t get a good read on what state they are in.

Not just that, but even in the early stages, Lacazette has looked like he will catch on pretty damn quickly. Meaning that the nightmarish scenario I had imagined, where Lacazette struggles initially and supporters go literally apesh*t may be mostly avoided.
