Steve McClaren has taken a new job that will see him working under a former Manchester United player to which he used to give the orders.

The ex-England manager has joined Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv as a coaching consultant, where Jordi Cruyff is manager.

It represents the latest chapter in the 56-year-old’s increasingly eclectic career.

Since leaving his post in charge of the national team McClaren has had two stints in charge of FC Twente (the first of which saw him win the Dutch league title), a season with Wolfsburg, a short time with Nottingham Forest, a disastrous spell with Newcastle and two goes at the Derby job.

Prior to all of that he was assistant manager at Manchester United, during which time Cruyff was on the books at Old Trafford.

The son of Dutch legend Johann, Jordi failed to ever become a regular at the Theatre of Dreams. However he did play a role in the club’s historic 1999 treble-winning season.

He’s now managing Maccabi Tel Aviv and, in a role reversal from their time together at Manchester United, will be giving the orders to McClaren.

‘I have huge respect for such a well-known club, both in Israel and in Europe,’ said McClaren following the announcement of his appointment.

‘I intend to help Jordi and the players achieve success for the fans this season.’
