Jurgen Klopp surely needs to sign a new goalkeeper (Picture: Getty)

Liverpool had a miserable weekend with their 5-0 defeat to Manchester City, with Sadio Mane shouldering much of the blame after foolishly getting himself sent off in the first half.

However, that controversy has only served to mask the real problem for Jurgen Klopp’s side, which is the shocking record of their goalkeepers so far this season.

Simon Mignolet has played three out of Liverpool’s four games, while Loris Karius was preferred against Arsenal, though he had little to do that day in a comfortable 4-0 victory.

Worryingly, when Liverpool’s ‘keepers are tested, they don’t tend to do very well, with their percentage of opposition shots on target saved this season the lowest in the Premier League.

Despite Mignolet and Karius both struggling for much of last season, Klopp bizarrely neglected to sign a new goalkeeper during the summer, with barely any names even linked with the club in that position.

While much has been made of Liverpool’s defence – which Klopp did try to strengthen by pursuing Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk – it seems that their real problems lie between the sticks as these shocking goalkeeping stats show.

It remains to be seen if Klopp will look to rectify the situation in the middle of the season, but a new shot-stopper looks an absolute must for January.

Despite clean sheets against Crystal Palace and Arsenal, Liverpool have already conceded eight goals in their first four Premier League games this season.
