Last night, the world saw England captain Steven Gerrard roar in the Three Lions victory over Hungary with a match-winning brace.

The Liverpool talisman brought his side back from the brink of defeat, and further scrutiny from the national media, with two phenomenal goals to seal a 2-1 victory for the home team at Wembley in front of a decent 72,000 crowd.

A controversial "goal" for the Hungarians, which was thought to have crossed the line and went down as a Phil Jagielka own goal, saw the away side take a 1-0 lead.

At that point, the forgiving nature of the fans inside Wembley was instantly gone, as further shambolic failure began to stare England and The FA right in the face.

And you can bet, the many millions watching on TV joined the Wembley crowd in feeling absolutely disgusted, with the chorus of boos reaching cacophonous levels.

England may have lost 4-1 to Germany in a very lacklustre World Cup showing, but being on the brink of a defeat at home to a side ranked 55 places below the Three Lions is much, much worse.

63 minutes gone and the ghosts of South Africa were back already to haunt the English, as under-fire coach Fabio Capello was starting to lose that last, tiny little bit of aura he still had about him.

As many around the nation were probably saying at that point, "Same ol' England, f**king it up again!"

With the severe budget cuts imposed by the new government, unemployment levels soaring, and the country's favourite and most watched sporting team once again looking like an absolute shambles, things weren't looking good for citizens of England supporting their national football team.

But of course in the midst of all the doom and gloom inside Wembley Stadium in Northwest London, out came a hero to lift spirits and drag the country forward once again.

Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard, one of the biggest superstars in the Premier League and captain of his national team, fulfilled his role by inspiring his players, the fans, and the country by leading his team to success.

In the 69th minute yet another England attack broke down and still these grossly overpaid prima donnas looked like they couldn't even score in a brothel.

The ball broke to Steven Gerrard, who vented a whole summer's worth of frustration in a powerful yet skilfully crafted shot from 25-yards out. The shot flew past a helpless Gabor Kiraly in the Hungary goal.

It was a goal all kids and young footballers out there dream of scoring. It was a dream moment for Steven Gerrard.

That goal was the perfect platform for him to prove his worth of the nation of England, spur on his players and the Wembley crowd, and allow him to celebrate by repeatedly lifting his arms up in the air, gesticulating to the crowd and country to forget about past failure.

He was letting them know its time to move on and get behind this new England team, in a new era, and a new shot at international glory.

The sweat was off Capello for a moment, but he knew the same would be required again if the pressure was to be lifted off his players, and if he wanted to remain employed.

And with a mean Hungary defence not giving anything away, the Italian mastermind knew another moment of magic would be necessary.

It seemed like England weren't going to get that victory they so desperately need.

The chances were slim, nobody else really looked like scoring, and yet again the Three Lions were verging on the brink of settling for second best.

England needed another hero and another moment of magic. They got one from the same hero.

With shades of Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi's dribbling, Gerrard danced through Hungary's defense before enticing Hungary's goalkeeper to come out and try to claim the ball. When the goalie did, he poked it past the Hungarian and into the back of the net for a second time.

Ten minutes after the horror show, England were 2-1, the crowd were full of cheers, an English win now seemed inevitable, and the players were all smiles as they showed off some of their best football.

It was the England that the whole nation wanted to see. They saw it thanks to the Liverpool legend that goes by the name Steven Gerrard.

Two stellar goals that every aspiring footballer in the world would've dreamed of scoring saw England secure the 2-1 friendly victory.

To all those hoping to follow in his footsteps, Steven Gerrard became that England hero, depicting the scenario that signifies a footballing great.

Hearing the commentator shouting his name, as he wheels away to celebrate the goal which saw his team take the lead, and come back from the brink to secure an almighty, vital win.

Here's hoping to many more heroic performances ahead from England captain Steven Gerrard.
