There are few rivalries that match Manchester United and Liverpool's intensity and passion.

Other leagues and sports have their rivalries, but there are very few sports that host such a bitter rivalry between two teams that do not share a common city.

Sir Alex Ferguson claimed recently that there is no other Premier League game that matches a Man United vs. Liverpool game, and that may be the only thing United and Liverpool fans can agree on.

This is a must win for both teams early on in the season and that adds unneeded tension and drama to an already dramatic and volatile situation.

    This will be a war.

Although this match had very little in direct contact with the league, it did stand to play a major part in the foundation of the rivalry within the rivalry.

Rafa Benitez would come up against Alex Ferguson for the first time at home, but the Spaniard lost.

Wayne Rooney scored the only goal of the game and despite United being down to 10 men after Wes Brown was sent off, United held on to the lead for the win.

This match became the first time that United have ever won three consecutive games against Liverpool in the Premier League at Anfield.

The game also contributed to Liverpool failing to finish in the top four.

In the first meeting between the two giants of English football, Manchester United came out on top. Liverpool had been the dominate force of English football prior to the Premier League coming around, and few could predict the reign that Man United would take on English football.

In retrospect this game is almost like a "passing of the sword" from Liverpool to United as this first game between the two giants led to an away win for United.

Despite Liverpool's Welsh legend netting, Manchester United still took all three points and took the very first Premier League title, and the first of their 11 titles.

A title that Liverpool still to this day strive to get their hands onto.

Liverpool suffered yet another home defeat to their massive rivals. As if suffering a home defeat to United was not bad enough, they had to watch them have one of the most successful years of any English football team in history.

United's treble winners conceded two goals from Patrick Berger and Sami Hyypia, but Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher endured one of the toughest league games of his fantastic Liverpool career by twice putting the ball into his own net.

Andy Cole also hit the back of a Liverpool net. United winning yet another Premier League title was bad enough, but this home loss to their rivals was arguably one of the reasons that Liverpool failed to secure a Champions League spot, missing out by two points to Leeds United.

Manchester United took just their second every double victory over Liverpool in the Premier League in the 2002-2003 season.

It started with a trip to Anfield in which United won 2-1. It had been six years since United last swept their Mersyside rivals and thanks to Diego Forlan it had occurred yet again.

Liverpool goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek became one of the most hated figures in a Liverpool jersey after turning Diego Forlan into a cult hero through the United fanbase.

After two horrendous errors gifted Forlan a double at Anfield, Dudek's time at Liverpool became very shortened. Sami Hyypia scored yet another goal against United, but it was in vain.

Liverpool were once again denied a potential Champions League spot, arguably by their home loss to United.

These two great teams have only met in four cup finals. United have won both of the FA Cup finals that these teams have fought over, while Liverpool have won both League Cup finals.

In 1996 Liverpool and United fought for the FA Cup Final. Liverpool had not lifted the FA Cup since 1992 while United had won the FA Cup in 1994.

The game was a very tight contest and the game was decided very late on by a Frenchman called Eric Cantona.

Cantana had recently only returned to the game after a nine-month ban for attacking a Crystal Palace fan. Despite his suspension Cantana took his chance and won yet an honour for United and took silverware out of the hands of United's biggest rivals.
