The 30 year-old, who joined the west London club from Liverpool in the summer, will undergo surgery on the injury on Monday, the club have confirmed.

Benayoun ruptured his Achilles during an Israel training session last week, missing the games against Croatia and Greece to make an early return to the Premier League club.

Benayoun has not played for Chelsea since sustaining a torn calf muscle in a Carling Cup match against Newcastle on Sept 22. In total, he has made just six appearances for his new side and is yet to start a Premier League game.

If Benayoun is missing for an entire six months, it seems unlikely he will play again this season.

Chelsea have other injury concerns, although the problems with Salomon Kalou and Alex are not nearly as serious as Benayoun's.

Kalou was unable to represent Ivory Coast this week with a thigh injury and should be back in full training next week. Alex, too, is suffering from a thigh strain and will not play against Aston Villa this weekend.
