Bad-boy Lee Cattermole dodges red card No 3 as Steve Bruce hauls off captain in derby defeat

By Sportsmail Reporter

Sunderland captain Lee Cattermole was substituted by manager Steve Bruce to save him from a third red card of the season.

The Middlesbrough-born midfielder, dismissed already against Birmingham and Wigan, was booked in the 68th minute by Phil Dowd for a rash tackle on Cheik Ismael Tiote.

He was taken off seven minutes later. In a Sportsmail interview last week, Cattermole spoke of his shame at being sent off against Wigan.

'It was weird,' he said. 'I was devastated. I didn't do anything. I ignored every phone call, didn't watch Match of the Day or pick up a paper. On the second day, the mate I live with came in and said, "You won't believe the abuse you're taking on the radio". I said, "Cheers!" That's why I'd been avoiding it all. 'I bottled it all up and let my frustration out in training.'
