Younes Kaboul has apologised to his Tottenham team-mates and Spurs fans for his sending off against Newcastle.

The defender appeared to headbutt Cheik Tiote in the 65th minute after a robust challenge from the Magpies midfielder.

Kaboul told the Spurs website: "I received what I felt was a bad tackle and that's why I reacted the way I did.

"It's not in my nature and I apologise to my team and would like to say sorry to the fans - I hope we will not see that on the pitch (from me) again."

Spurs secured a 2-0 win despite playing with 10 men for the last third of the match at White Hart Lane and climbed to fourth in the Premier League table.

Kaboul, 24, now misses their next three games, and manager Harry Redknapp had little sympathy for the Frenchman, saying: "If he's put his head in [Tiote's] face he had to go off.

"He showed a lack of discipline. Other people will now come into the team while he's suspended, and they'll make it difficult to be shifted."

Kaboul will sit out Tottenham's Premier League matches against Fulham on New Year's Day and at Everton on 5 January, and their home FA Cup third round tie against Charlton four days later.
