Pablo Zabaleta wins appeal against red card at Arsenal

Manchester City defender Pablo Zabaleta has avoided a three-match ban after his red card at Arsenal on Wednesday was overturned by the Football Association.

A Regulatory Commission hearing upheld City's claim for wrongful dismissal after he and Arsenal full-back Bacary Sagna were both sent straight off.

Sagna appeared to be the main aggressor after the duo clashed on 90 minutes.

The decision means the Argentine defender is now available to face Leicester City in the FA Cup on Sunday.

City's left-back will now also be able to play in forthcoming Premier League games against Wolves and Aston Villa as the Manchester club bids to maintain its title chase.

The incident occurred as stoppage time approached in a pulsating game at the Emirates, as Zabaleta and Sagna chased the ball down the touchline.

As 27-year-old Sagna fell to the floor, he returned to his feet and the pair squared up to each other with their foreheads clearly touching.

An Arsenal spokeswoman told BBC Sport that they would not be appealing against Sagna's dismissal.

He will now miss games against Leeds in the FA Cup, Ipswich in the Carling Cup and away at West Ham in the Premier League.
