David Beckham could be at Spurs this weekend, says Harry Redknapp

The build-up to the FA Cup has been eclipsed by England’s Ashes glory, but David Beckham could be back in English football by tomorrow to add some much-needed glamour to the competition.

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp believes Beckham’s eight-week loan deal from LA Galaxy could be completed by the time his side take on Charlton Athletic at White Hart Lane.

Redknapp, who hopes the former England captain will attend tomorrow’s third-round match, said the deal was ‘90 per cent done’ and added: ‘There is a good chance that we will get David Beckham in here.

‘It’s just a case of sorting out the length of the loan and one or two bits and pieces. He could be here on Sunday.’

Beckham, who plans to travel to England from Los Angeles over the weekend, has assured the MLS side he will not seek a loan deal with any club other than Tottenham.

If the deal falls through he will just train with another English side.

There are still some details to be worked out before the deal can be finalised but the player’s lucrative image rights will not be an issue, as this is a matter to be arranged between Beckham and Tottenham.

However, LA Galaxy will insist Spurs pay all of Beckham’s £80,000-a-week wages and insure him against injury. A ruptured achilles sustained on loan with AC Milan last March ruled Beckham, 35, out for six months.

Redknapp ridiculed suggestions Beckham would not be fit enough to play Premier League football.

He added: ‘He wouldn’t come if he wasn’t fit. He’s not a punch-drunk heavyweight champion coming back, is he, who’s washed up, skint

and comes and has another fight and gets knocked out?

‘He wants to play football. Most players would sit around thinking: “That’s OK. I’ve got eight weeks now to sit around the pool”. But he wants to play. It tells you everything about him.

‘That’s probably why he’s had such a great career.’

Beckham’s likely arrival also spells the end for David Bentley, who has made just three appearances this season for Spurs.

Last night he was on his way to Birmingham after a loan deal was agreed and he will complete the deal after a medical over the weekend.

Redknapp suggested the fans’ reaction had not helped Bentley. He said: ‘David’s got fantastic talent and great ability.

‘I played him against Arsenal, he’d been injured, came back and played his first game and did well, but the crowd was on him a bit. They were waiting for him to make a mistake and it’s not easy when you play like that.

‘He was low after the game. He was disappointed and I thought, “Maybe it’s time for him to move on”.

‘He could go somewhere else and then do great.’
