Arsenal: Why Bidding on Gary Cahill Is Arsene Wenger's Only Option

Arsene Wenger's laissez-faire approach to retaining and acquiring talent has landed Arsenal in one of the most dire situations in the history of the team.

Bidding for Gary Cahill isn't just the right move for Wenger and Arsenal, it's the only feasible option at this point.

They need to start making some moves to breath hope into the fanbase and the team itself. Right now, Arsenal isn't exactly a desirable place to be. Wenger targeting a player of Cahill's stature is exactly the sort of initiative everyone has been waiting for.

ESPN.com reports that Arsenal is expected to return for Cahill, a move that shouldn't come as a surprise, but also doesn't guarantee that they are going to be able to obtain him by any means.

Even so, the fact that they are actively involving themselves in the mix is encouraging. The neglect the team has shown for addressing gaping holes within the lineup has their followers outraged and their team losing.

Putting their hat in the ring and making a legitimate effort to compete with other teams for Cahill is a necessity at this point, if Wenger wants to keep his job. While the team keeps asserting that they support Wenger, the horrific losses are mounting.

Eventually, they have to place the blame on someone. Although Wenger has had a great run with Arsenal, he would undoubtedly bear that burden.

This sort of move gives him some much needed credibility. It's a small step in the grand scheme of things, as there will be plenty of suitors looking to bring him in. However, even if Arsenal strike out, targeting young, talented players is all anyone has wanted to see from Wenger and Arsenal.

Obviously, there is a lot of work to be done and Arsenal is nowhere near recovery. Cahill wouldn't completely turn around the Gunners, but he would make it seem as though the club isn't as complacent as they seem.
