Vidic suggests he's ready to quit internationals after Serbia fail to qualify for Euro 2012

Nemanja Vidic has indicated he will retire from international football after Serbia's failure to qualify for Euro 2012.

The Manchester United defender missed a second-half penalty as his country chased a win in Slovenia that would have guaranteed a place in the play-offs.

Instead Serbia were defeated 1-0 by Dare Vrsic's first-half goal, which signals the end of Dejan Stankovic's international career and, seemingly, that of Vidic.

'It's time for a change of generations, and for some older players to say goodbye to Serbian kit,' said Vidic, which was widely interpreted in his homeland as a personal farewell to national service.

He added he was disappointed that he would never get to play in the European Championship. Such a move is likely to be welcomed by Old Trafford boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

Vidic was making his first appearance since injurying a calf in United's opening game of the Barclays Premier League season.

For a man who has scored just twice in 56 caps, it was a surprise when Vidic stepped up to take the 63rd-minute spot kick - but no surprise when giant Slovenia keeper Samir Handanovic saved it.

Vidic said: 'I took responsibility and I am aware of the consequences of a poorly executed penalty. If I had scored the game would have taken an entirely different course. So we are where we are.'

While Vidic's retirement at 29 seems premature, Stankovic's was less of a surprise.

The 33-year-old Inter Milan midfielder earned his 102nd cap with the game against Slovenia - joining Savo Milosevic as Serbia's most-capped player - but indicated he may play in one more friendly to break the record.
