Red Devils reported to be keen on Benfica's Argentine playmaker

The agent of highly-rated Benfica forward Nicolas Gaitan claims Manchester United have held informal talks regarding a possible transfer. The Argentina international has emerged as a top target for the Red Devils as they continue with their search for added creativity. United were strongly linked with Inter Milan's Wesley Sneijder over the summer, but no official move was made. It appears as though they have now set their sights on Gaitan, having seen first-hand this season just how devastating he can be. The 23-year-old played a leading role for Benfica as they held United home and away in the UEFA Champions League. Sir Alex Ferguson was understood to be impressed by what he saw and discussions are reported to have been held between the Red Devils and their Portuguese counterparts.

Contact

"I have not received any contact from United but there have been conversations between the two clubs," Gaitan's representative, Jose Irribaran, told Antena. "If these talks progress, then we will get our time to speak. "But Nico is very happy at Benfica and is looking forward to enjoying a successful season." While Irribaran is prepared to shed some light on the transfer rumours, Benfica remain tight-lipped when it comes to Gaitan's future. "The club do not respond to news published in the papers," a club spokesman told skysports.com.
