'God of War' Creator Doesn’t Know If He’ll Ever Make Another Game

Earlier this year, God of War creator and Twisted Metal designer David Jaffe, announced the closure of his studio, The Bartlet Jones Supernatural Detective Agency. At the time, Jaffe revealed he was prepared to take a break from games development, but it wasn't clear just how temporary or permanent this break would be.

Maybe he should team up with cliffy to make something completely outside their wheelhouse.

TranceHop 1975d ago

That’ll be sick if he team up with cliffy b to work on a new game. I’m a fan of both.

Shikoku1973d ago

Haha cliffy Bs ego wouldnt allow anyone else to be the room let alone him.

UltraNova1973d ago (Edited 1973d ago )

Imagine both David and Jaffe making a GOW - GoW hybrid 3rd person fantasy game!

No? Yeah I agree...

bouzebbal1972d ago (Edited 1972d ago )

don't know what happened to that guy.. completely disappeared of the radars ..
his last paper style game was utter s***.

TheCryptKeeper1973d ago

Yeah, two people who have used up all their talent. Should be an excellent game.

sle7enn1973d ago (Edited 1973d ago )

Cliffy b is like vd, nobody wants that. Seriously though David Jaffe is 5 million times more talented than cliffy, Cliff was just an egomaniac that thought he was better than everyone else. He's the kind of person that was most likely never satisfied by anything. He might be a good developer within a large team but when he tried going solo his ideas were just copy past jobs. He was unable to come up with an original idea but instead mismanaged a team of people that trusted him and his vision. I saw him a couple times at PAX East and the way he talked to people was disgusting, he talked down to people and just had this "i'm better than you" aura about him. The fact that people didn't punch him in the face was baffling, I know I wanted to.

kingtoby20811973d ago (Edited 1973d ago )

I guess that would be interesting

jelloaceomega1973d ago

That sound like 80's buddy cop movie. Two renegades cops that don't play by the rules, and need to solve a case together.

Him and Cliffy B have done this similar thing where they've stepped back from the AAA market and tried to do smaller titles only for them to not do as well as they hoped. To see that makes me think they should have just stayed within the AAA market and create huge new IPs similar to their old ones like Gears of War or God of War. Hell if I was David Jaffe I'd have asked to even work on Heavenly Sword 2.

TylerFischer1975d ago

I still can't believe Cliffy turned down the chance to work on Silent Hills

Harkins17211973d ago

Jaffe just didn't want to be on big games. He wants to be his own boss per say

-Foxtrot1973d ago

Yeah but look how that's turned out for him...

It's not like Sony restricts you and limits what you create.

Seraphim1973d ago

if I recall, when Jaffe stepped down from Sony it was due to the overwhelming amount of work required, long hours required for AAA games while being the lead producer of them. Along with wanting more time with his family. It wasn't because he wanted to be his own boss.

I think Drawn to Death was a great idea. unfortunately it wasn't a great idea for 2014. It was a great idea for the 90s, maybe early 2000's.

Harkins17211973d ago

That doesn't matter. He may not be making games but if he was a mess while making huge block buster games and didn't like doing so it's not the work for him. He wanted to try something new and it didn't work out.

Nebaku1973d ago

So basically because their indie games weren't as commercially successful, they are better off making paint by numbers AAA titles they don't really want to make. Got it.

Segata1973d ago (Edited 1973d ago )

Neither of them understands the modern market. Esp Jaffe. They are mentally still stuck in the western iconic game dev era. (talking about when Carmack, Cliffy, and others were the kings) An era that is long dead.

opc1972d ago

I think they understand. It's just that their strengths are in overseeing big budget, high-pressure, time consuming projects.

They're both in their 40s, but I imagine spending 16-20 hours a day working and thinking about work plays a lot into their decisions.

opc1972d ago

yeah I can't imagine the long hours required to direct and design a game. any image you find of Cory barlog looks like he just doesn't sleep but it seems like he enjoys it

ApocalypseShadow1975d ago (Edited 1975d ago )

Listening to his podcasts, even the one he does with Cory, maybe he should make a VR game.(starts 12:13 seconds in for the lazy lol)
https://m.youtube.com/watch...
He helped make one genre take off. He should help a new medium take off.

The sad part is that Cory can't play in VR without getting sick. He still thinks VR is amazing though. But you can tell Jaffe's mind is blown by VR. He loves it. I love it.

VR game Jaffe. Make it.

ApocalypseShadow1975d ago

Ooh look. A baby disagree fairy running around. How cute. Lol.

MadLad1973d ago

Says the person getting all whiney and bent out of shape for a couple of disgrees.

ApocalypseShadow1973d ago (Edited 1973d ago )

I don't mind disagrees. I laugh at them. Like I did above silly.

And, if gamers watch the link, he tells you exactly what he wants to make which is a horror game in VR. He no longer cares to make traditional games.

Rimeskeem1975d ago

Probs gonna get disagrees but it would be interesting if he made like a VR GoW. Of course correctly.

telekineticmantis1973d ago

If Only Sony supported their original Franchises the way Nintendo does.

xenz1973d ago (Edited 1973d ago )

Like God of War...? Eh.. wth?

-Foxtrot1973d ago (Edited 1973d ago )

F-Zero, Ice Climbers, Mother, Diddy Kong Racing have hardly had any love from Nintendo over the year and even titles which have had some games here and there like Luigis Mansion, Donkey Kong, Pikman, Star Fox, Kirby, Yoshi, Metroid, Golden Sun, Kid Icarus don't receive the same amount of love Mario or Zelda do. Hell even games like Donkey Kong, Yoshi and Kirby for example have always been side scrollers recently, good games but would it kill them to make a 3D platformer or something which actually feels different like a breath of fresh air.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 Expected to Release Around 2027, Says Square Enix

It's fairly common knowledge that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth enjoyed a relatively smooth development cycle, owing to the fact that Final Fantasy 7 Remake's team was largely kept intact, and the first game had obviously laid the foundations in terms of visuals and gameplay systems. It took Square Enix around three years to craft Rebirth, and it expects the same kind of timeline when it comes to the third (and final) title in the trilogy.

Soooo long. Sigh lmao gonna be a long long wait.

Cacabunga3d ago

Yes but better they take their time with such game. A good argument to get PS5 Pro

Sonic18812d ago

The PS6 might be out by then

Cacabunga2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

In 2,5 years? No way .. Pro will be around for at least 2 years..

RaidenBlack2d ago

Might be an unpopular opinion here, but I wish the remake was a 2-parter not a 3-parter.
Die-hard fans will disagree and I get it but ... I think they're stretching the project abit too much imho.

lucian2292d ago

considering how much story is in the original, i think it's fine. Everything is very well elaborated and the connection to those characters are much greater thanks to it. Like, i like seeing tifa and aerith as best friends for example. the fact the first 2 games in this trilogy basically only covered the first disc of the original is kinda crazy tho lol

Becuzisaid2d ago

@lucian That first disc was a whopper though. I don't remember the second being as long, and the third is basically just the final dungeon.

I'm glad they did 3 games. The first 2 have been absolutely phenomenal. Looking forward to the Weapons (the real ones) waking up and attacking, the underwater exploration (they set that up pretty good with the lore of Under Junon), and finally Cloud's big reveal. It'll be real interesting to see how they handle the repercussions of Cloud's behavior from Rebirth and what he's going to do in Part 3. Like the party should realistically just abandon him for being such an a-hole, and after what he did to a Tifa. They really played up the whole Sephiroth mind control thing in Rebirth. They really need to nail the emotional payoff to that. Hope it's not just swept under the rug by the party and just move on post Lifestream.

-Foxtrot2d ago

Also 3 games and then a Crisis core remaster

Then god knows what else

It’s overkill

I’d under the trilogy if they lived up to their excuse about it being about expanding the lore. Like they said the first game would heavily expand the lore of Midgar through side missions but the side missions didn’t do that at all, they were all pretty generic. Felt like a bad excuse to justify 3 games.

-Foxtrot2d ago

Least we have a potential date

Although now I’m just thinking

“Damn 3-4 years to see if we’ll ever get a FFVIII remake next”

VersusDMC2d ago

Apparently there is a IX remake getting made. You need that to come out and be successful before a VIII remake is even possibly green lit.

But if you're thinking the FF7REMAKE team is making a FFVIII remake after part 3...that is not happening. They are definitely making a new FF after.

-Foxtrot2d ago

Well apparently IX is coming first because the VIII team are working on the VII remakes

So if they get finished then hopefully they will work on VIII next

You say it won’t but I’m hoping they will…just something less ambitious

TheEroica2d ago

Yikes.... Sales are already lower than expected for the sequel. Third game is gonna be lower....

GoodGuy093d ago (Edited 3d ago )

I really think it should've been just one game or two at most, kept to the simple turn based combat, and no crazy changes to the story. But it's whatever. I liked rebirth but man was it bloated with so much unnecessary and repetitive stuff. Square is really betting their money on the remakes. I do admit the remakes have been the only mainline ff games Ive actually quite liked since probably 10 lol.

Lexreborn22d ago

I don’t feel like it’s bloated, it’s more or less all the same content that was in the original for mini games but they expanded everyone’s narrative better.

I am glad they expanded even on the characters that came in later games that wasn’t in the original. It’s a weird position we keep putting devs in when one moment we say give us a complete game with tons of content. They deliver said content and then we treat it like it’s overwhelming or to much.

Crazy part is you could just focus on the story and do none of the “bloat”. Gamers really seem to never be happy when you look online forums

rambot892d ago

Wouldn’t make sense financially. 1 game would involve a mammoth amount of development time and a gamble to say the least. Making one part of the game and seeing if it makes $$$ gives reason to justify making a part 2 and 3 and make more money too.

OtterX3d ago

That's pretty crazy if you think about the 2005 PS3 tech demo that started this all! I'm not sure if they ever intended to remake the game at that time, but the fan outcry for it was so incredible that it eventually became a reality! Now imagine all of the fans who have died waiting for this. :\

GamerRN2d ago

That's how you turn an 80$ game into a $240 game

jambola2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Which game is 240?
You must've bought from a bad scalper because I got both games for normal price each

GamerRN2d ago

How much did each part cost?

Lionsguard3d ago

I mean not too surprised, they already have most of all the assets already made. I just hope it's UE5 and they crank it to 11 and finish strong. I also hope they go back and upgrade Remake and Rebirth to UE5 too. BUY THE DAMN GAME PEOPLE!!

franwex3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

For all the complaints about GAAS and same thing getting released every year. It’s almost dumb that gamers here don’t support a game like Rebirth.

MrNinosan2d ago

Rebirth is selling great and is supported. Don't worry.

MrNinosan2d ago

It won't be UE5.
If that wad the case, we wouldn't play it in 3 years.

Becuzisaid2d ago

And it would likely play like trash compared to the first 2, at least on PS5.

Josh Sawyer, Pentiment Director, Comments on Industry Burnout Issues

Josh Sawyer tweets: "I believe burnout has already replaced crunch as the primary hazard of the game industry. Managers are setting teams up to fail and devs are getting ground up as collateral damage. I have suffered from burnout myself. It's no joke. Thanks to @thewritegame and @Eeoor for the talk.

As with crunch, it's likely that managers may acknowledge creating the circumstances leading to burnout but will not take the necessary steps to change them. It's important that devs continue to talk to and support each other and to apply pressure until change is effected."

anast3d ago

Typically burnout comes from abusive management.
