at smash launch it beat Spider-man’s launch numbers. Meaning that with aligned sales, the Fastest selling PS exclusive was beaten by smash brothers.

It sold, not including digital, 3 million copies in the US alone, in the first 3 days, while Spider-man did 3.3 million including digital in the first 3 days, worldwide.

There’s no cherry picking. Smash was the biggest exclusive game last year

It was always going to sell well, Nintendo have survived off the same titles for years, that won't change. I imagine at some point Mario will have to save the princess again and again and again and again. Before anyone asks, yes I have Switch but there is just enough and don't get me started about online, it's bloody 2019, not 2009.

same titles? How often does a Zelda game come along? Smash? Metroid? They might re-use their IPs but they certainly take their time bringing the next installment. Unlike some of these franchises that are now annualized.

I mean it did release in December.
During the holidays.
When a lot of people got a Switch for Christmas.

Those factors did work in its favor...but it's also a major Nintendo first-party title, and it is specifically Smash. None of those things are to be taken lightly. This game could have released any time of the year and it would be a big hit. But launching in December certainly did NOT hurt the game's chances in the least.

Like what exactly? Nintendo is the least likely to take risks as they have basically the same big games from 25-30 years(no doubt they evolved so credit must be given)

Wiiu ports are on switch at full price. Besides few games what sell with Nintendo? Zelda isn't Huge seller so they have Mario and smash. They have other IP's but none of them are what you can consider big sellers

Sony beats Nintendo on hardware and software with many different types of games. I like ms during Xbox 360 days and I want to see them go back to making some great games

Nintendo fans and critics have a clear double standard when it comes to reviews. Very few review Nintendo games fairly that's because most big journalists grew up woti Nintendo consoles

BOTW vs Mario Odyssey. Both had a aggregated score of 97. Some of the highest reviewed games in the last 15-20 years and you are going to say its subjective.....

Read my 2nd comment my man. Let me know when journalists start reviewing Nintendo games fairly. I have been a gamer for 30 years and most gaming sites are biased towards Nintendo

This last Zelda had the weakest story of any main entry 3d Zelda. At launch the game had major technical issues that would make sure other games suffer in scores (frame rates were a major issue)

But I don't expect most to agree because in today's society any criticism leads to bring labeled a hater. People don't want to face criticism because in their heads they have built this perfect game and they are willing to overlook issues

And once again wiiu was a huge failure Sony and ms wouldn't stand a chance launching a new system this quick. Ps3 struggled yet don't kept at it so did ms this Gen with Xbox one

But Nintendo not only gave up they than had the guts to sell all those wiiu ports for full price on switch once more

But let's praise them. They gave up during the fight and needed a new system to save their behinds

An underpowered console which costs more than ps4 and Xbox one and all of its accessories and some of the games cost more on switch

Come back with an argument not highly rated this and highly rated that. Even smash is a port from wiiu with better graphics and more characters

Yet gamers like yall complain when ps4 gets few remasters

To be fair, Nintendo games can only be found on Nintendo consoles (not speaking about emulation, but their games in general). For me at least, it's had some more playtime than my PS4 in recent months. However, that's due to change with KH3 and RE2 Remake coming up soon of course. I just mostly either play on my PC though is the thing, so like you said, all subjective!

In the last ten years Sony has four overall goty winners more than any other publisher and they have more 90 plus rated games on metacritic in that time period. I think both are best in class when it comes to exclusives and I don’t agree with you saying it’s no competition or other people nagging on Nintendo exclusives acting as if their bad when they are not.

Yeah it's really quite impressive that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate smashed the best selling exclusive game record that easily. Not only did it top God of War and Spider-Man but also all the records that the Halo games set back in the day.

Both great games. Spider-man is over 9 million copies and Smash is over 2.5. So, even though I’m sure it will outsell Spider-man, I wouldn’t say it’s “smashed” it quite yet.

Smash did over 5 million in the first week worldwide. It did 3.6 million in the US in the first month not counting digital sales. It will pass Spider-Man worldwide quickly if it hasn't already. It already outsold Spider-Man US sales to date in just one month and again that isn't counting digital sales for Smash while it is for Spider-Man.

Unfortunately NPD doesn't combine the two Pokemon SKUs, so the sales of each version are separate and it won't make for nearly as impressive of headlines.

Though if gen 8 takes the series in an exciting new direction and Detective Pikachu takes off, I can see both SKUs ending up near the top of the charts at the end of next year.

Well considering it beat Spider-Man's record, it's only logical to mention that game. I believe Marvel's Spider-Man held the record for fastest selling exclusive of this generation. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is now the fastest selling exclusive in history.

Wouldn't the two numbers have to align within a time frame to be called that. One month of sales seems a rather short period of time. Maybe it's OK though. Both released on the 7th of the month.

I do think Smash will ultimately outsell Spider-Man, because it's Smash, and it usually sells well, and is a very popular game, and appeals to both casual and hard core alike. But to say its the fastest selling, it would have to outpace total sales, otherwise the metrics can be refuted and you see all these justifications like you see around the comment section here.

Personally, I'm happy for both games. Couldn't care less which one sold faster.

It's a Nintendo franchise that always sells well. But then, games are usually scarce on Nintendo's platform so obviously it's going to sell well. You're always waiting for Nintendo to make something and release it. And Smash Bros came out on **DECEMBER 7.**

On PS4, besides Spider-Man that came out on **SEPTEMBER 7**, where it made most of its launch sales and continued to sell for the next couple of months, gamers had every other first party game to choose from that they didn't pick up earlier in the year, every third party game like RDR2 that didn't come out on Switch. Also, gamers picked up a PSVR and games to choose from like Astrobot, Tetris, Beat Saber,etc.

To compare December sales and two different styles of games when one came out almost exactly 3 months before the other is kind of ridiculous. Especially when PS4 had way more variety and things to choose from.

7 out of 20 are from Nintendo, yes! BUT..

1. Smash
2. Mario Party
3. Let's GO Pikachu
4. Let's GO Eevee

that's basically 3 games and the other 3 are last year's games all from Nintendo. and out of all 20 top best selling games in 2018 by numbers, here are the games that are NOT ON SWITCH

Red Dead Redemption 2
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4
Madden NFL 19
Marvel’s Spider-Man
Far Cry 5
God of War 2018
Monster Hunter: World

The article shows the best selling games of **December**. And lists SSBU as number 1.

The article title itself says December 2018 NPD: Smash Bros. beats Spider-Man in exclusive battle.

Spiderman came out in SEPTEMBER.

Any comparison of both sales in December when one was selling already for 3 months is not a comparison. If Spider-Man would have launched in December, then it would make sense of a "battle."

Right below the article it has:

December 2018 NPD: Nintendo Switch dominates Playstation 4 and Xbox One.

Sure it mentions other things in the article, but they are talking about December.

Spiderman came out in September. It made most of its sales already for 3 months. The article is spun to make it look like a game that just came out beat a game in sales that launched and was selling for 3 months.

Furthermore, this article is not only talking about how it’s not only beaten SpiderMan as the previous record holder, but Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is now the fastest selling exclusive in history - that’s ridiculously impressive. That beats the previous record holder Halo Reach from 2010.

To downplay that with “oh but SpiderMan came out in September so it’s not that impressive when you think about it” is pretty silly

That doesn’t look like “barely” to me. As for worldwide sale, we don’t have data on that yet so we can’t say for sure which console was the best selling (although if you do have a source, please share).

I don't really see people bemoaning Nintendo's lack of exclusives only their 3rd party support. The general consensus is Sony and Nintendo are the two manufacturers who excel in exclusive output.

That's actually a fair point. Nintendo has a pretty consistent output of exclusives just like Sony, no one can really refute that.

It's true though, Nintendo and Sony both put out a lot of great games, and they both have their share of masterpieces.

It was a pretty high demand system this holiday. Nintendo had some good will leading up to the holidays, and Smash is Smash. I know quite a few people who said their kids wanted it, and I know a few other people who wanted one....for Smash mostly.

I think some of the people in this thread don't realize how popular the franchise is.

But

Yes. maybe not small children, but I know kids who could outplay even some adults. I know a kid who completed Bloodborne at age 6. I could complete games back when games were hard before I hit my teens.

The title is very suspicious... Why the heck compare a game released on December to a game that was released on September? This comparisons are always about games releases the same month. By the exact same logic, I can say that Spiderman beats Zelda in exclusive battles!!!

I am glad and happy for Nintendo but it is necessary to bring some simple facts here...

PS4 was released 5 years ago reigning supreme even at this day when most of consoles would be already dying in sales. The Switch was released only a year ago.

The PS4 is the #1 console in the world and no other console, not the switch or Xbox have been able to come close. Is good to win on 1 territory but is a master achievement to reign worldwide.

Read the article. It's not about December sales, it's about launch sales. Release months aren't relevant, what matters in this case is how much the games each sold at launch.

Spiderman wasn't even close to the holidays and had to deal with RDR2 and cod/bf.

Do you even bother to research things before you post them? The 3.3 for Spiderman in 3 days is worldwide. The 3 million for Smash Bros in 11 days is US only.

There's really no way to reasonably compare the two data points.

Considering you changed the subject and brought up Spider-Man's 3.3 million worldwide vs Smash's 3 million in USA... well, it looks like you're the one trying to move the goalpost. So as you said, "keep moving that goal post if it makes you feel better."

Then why not a title saying "fastest selling console exclusive ever". Somehow that is second to selling faster than Spider-man? That doesn't make any sense.

Read the article:

They reference Spider-Man because it was the fastest selling exclusive this gen, so Spider-Man is a more relevant benchmark. However, they could have just said Smash was the fastest selling exclusive ever and just not mention any game. The Spider-Man reference was probably just an attention grabber.

I wonder if this game will have legs.

I don't know why, but I have a feeling that this game exploded in popularity within the first month and now the hype has really deflated.

Not that this is a very good judgement of hype and concurrent player count but Ultimate took a nosedive on Twitch as far as most watch streams goes.

It's currently being beat by Battlefield V and Sea of Thieves which are both considered to be massive failures of 2018.

Smash generally has legs. At least historically. It's kind of a cornerstone game for Nintendo systems. It probably has more legs than any other Nintendo franchise besides Mario Kart, which tends to do well until the next release....if it's even in the same gen.

I hate to try and over-analyze what's being said here, but a new Smash Bros, released during the holiday season, where the Switch was a high demand system, seems like comparing apples to oranges for a game released in September, which is soon after school starts back, and while Spider-Man is a popular franchise, the game itself wasn't in the genre that appeals to every age group like Smash does.

I think it's good for both games, and have no problem if Smash is the fastest selling. It won't affect me either way. I don't care for Smash much myself, because I'm not into the genre. It's sell-through rate had no bearing on my enjoyment of Spider-man.

yea im thinking the same aswell. i just feel like the successor of new hardware ninty provides is better. Unlike Sony, they cut cost and on some occasions you can see the difference. PSVita slim, Ps4 slim PS3 slim etc

The question isn't about sales of the game but sales of the season pass. Its those sales that will make Nintendo continue DLC on the game even if Sakurai quits. Hopefully its done well enough for Nintendo to consider demand for Rex/Pyra and Arms characters (on top of the usual suspects like Waluigi, Isaac, Dixie etc).

According to this article and the npd data... Smash Bros ultimate was the 5th best selling game in all 2018... Considering that was only for 3 weeks against months from the competition and the top exclusive this year.... That is something to be amazed by... And that's only physical sales... Not even counting digital ones.
What really was even More amazing is that according to the npd the switch beat the ps4 this 2018 overall....ouch! Get some lotion cause that burns the soul, doesn't it?

You don't get what I'm saying. I'm saying the article makes out like Smash sold more copies than Spider-Man has, which is untrue. Yeah, it's sold really well, but it sold around 3m copies in 11 days according to Nintendo (World Wide). Spider-Man sold over 3.3m copies World Wide in three days - that's what I'm saying.

The game is a few months old, so obviously, Smash would outsell it in its release month, but the article is pushing for clicks and bait. Also, I disagree with your comment about Smash selling more in the same period as it's selling slower at a much busier time of the year - don't forget SM is now over 10m copies sold, probably 11m including Christmas.

Again, not taking anything away from Smash' success, just stating the article is set up as clickbait.

Dear lord I hate the Sony fandom of this website. If this were the other way around you guys would be praising Spider-Man for beating out a huge title like Smash. They were both good games and Smash sold really well, even better than a game with a much larger install base. That’s what this article is trying to depict. Bad comparison . Spider-Man didn’t come out in December but Smash did . Also , what else does Nintendo have for sale that people with a Switch don’t have during December ? A few ports and indies . It’s not a direct comparison . I’m not a Smash fan so I didn’t buy one game this holiday as I own all the big games for Switch already

Yawn..... all consoles have this issue... Game publisher/developer takes advantage of a gap in competition. Literally what other game that appeals to a large age group on Nintendo... there isn't any so everyone in Nintendo land is focused on Smash .....

Come on football and golf are two sports with a ball.... that's the only common thing...... other than that not comparable. The seasons are different but overlap so the push for video games based on the sport happens at different times.....

Spiderman and Smash bros may have fighting in it but they are not in competition with each other because both games bring totally different experience to gamers......... No one is sweating over this........
