Crossplay should now be available in all online multiplayer games. If Fortnite can do it then so can everyone else.

Indeed. Only thing that matters on consoles now is exclusive games. Everyone should be able to play together across all platforms on all 3rd party games. Hate fortnite all you want but its shown us how well if can work.

TheGamez1001678d ago (Edited 1678d ago )

Ouch the disagrees, forgot this was N4G, full of stubborn "gamers" that only care for one platform. Why is it bad to play with friends on other platforms? Pc and playstation have done it since long ago. And if its about hardware or input advantages (which is always the main argument), you will be matched with the same ppl with the same inputs if you arent playing with a buddy on a different platform. Also brings in a bigger pool of players to play with, faster matchmakings, and the game could last longer. Itd especially be amazing for noncompetitive games like destiny, warframe, and borderlands.

Shikoku1678d ago

If you think long ago was 15yrs then that explains why you think its a good idea.

sampsonon1678d ago

not true. the reason half of my extended family owns a ps4 is because that was the only way we could all play together. when that happens that means sony makes the profit from console sales. which in turn allows them to invest in big budget games. don't fool yourself by thinking it's good for the industry.

Sony understands this.
if it's not their product they would be smart to stay away from crossplay.

PurpHerbison1678d ago (Edited 1678d ago )

Ever since I was a kid I always wanted to go against opposing consoles. In Rocket League I can do that and rep my Sony roots at the same time. It is also a good thing for competitive gamers to have a bigger pool of players to go against for the sake of competition. Also takes longer for said games to fizzle out.

Atom6661678d ago

"don't fool yourself by thinking it's good for the industry"

Lol. These are 3rd party games that are still being sold on PS consoles, still charging those MTs, still making Sony that 30% cut, and still making Sony money on PS+.

They'll be fine if we can play against players on other platforms.

Having multiplayer games crossplay between consoles wouldn't hurt Sony's bottom line. They have had many games crossplay with PC and Sony still seems to be investing in big budget games.

Having crossplay across all consoles means third party devs are able to cut down on server costs and maintenance, which allows them to invest in big budget games. Don't be that guy that thinks this wouldn't be good for the industry.

@Atom666 please read my comment again. think

Neonridr1678d ago

so if your buddy has an XB1 and has Call of Duty, why can't he play against you again? Or what if one of your extended family members just really wanted to have an XB over a PS4. That's their right as a gamer. But you would rather punish that player and not let them play with you? Again, how does that hurt you?

Atom6661678d ago

Oh I read that nonsense. Walled garden should be preserved because Sony gets sales based entirely on gamers not wanting to be excluded from playing 3rd party games with those on their platforms.

That's stupid. Their openness to PC and games like Fortnite show that it was all just fearmongering from fanboys. Sony continues to make bank, and will do so in the future when more and more games become crossplay.

rainslacker1677d ago

Considering that Sony is three times as popular anyways, is your extended family really missing out on anything? If playing with your friends or family is more important to them, then are their need to buy different platforms for whatever games they buy, or for whatever services they have on the other platform, really important enough to them?

I know there are people who buy the same console their friends do. The Xbox 360 was helped by that, especially among the college crowd. But, the number of people who buy consoles for the reasons you say is pretty limited.

Kribwalker1677d ago

@sampson
so you care more about your preferred companies bottom line then making the gaming community a bigger and better place not separated by stupid boundaries?

The definition of a shill right there

ChristopherJack1677d ago

So you don't want crossplay, because your friends may not buy a Sony console & that may translate into smaller profits which could lead to less investment in exclusives?

That's a lot of mental gymnastics & a terrible reason as a consumer to dismiss crossplay. "I don't want crossplay because sony would earn less".

So without being locked into the same ecosystem as your friends & family, you believe the common person would toss a coin to decide on their console? No! There's still plenty of reasons people choose their consoles & the fact that their friends own one or not is still relevant, just no longer a selling point(which could work against Sony too).

I wouldn't say thats the only thing, its also the ecosystem, horsepower, accessories, controllers, social aspects, features, rewards etc.

NeoGamer2321677d ago (Edited 1677d ago )

It only matter because gamers make it matter.

Gamers buy into company marketing on exclusives making it a differentiator for a console purchase.

I buy all the consoles for my gaming room but not everyone does. It would save me significant money (and HDMI ports) if I only bought one and could play with anyone on any system and play every game. These three things are the last impediments to the ending of console wars and the start of a world where gamers can choose hardware/firmware/network based on their personal preferences rather then an analysis/trade-offs of what games they like.

The only people that try and justify that exclusives, are people that think that their console has the best exclusives. The other people are just trying to play all the games they like regardless of platform, on the hardware they prefer to game on, using the network they like the most.

If a developer can do it then it should be allowed. They shouldn't have to wait or go through some "beta" program to have their game be crossplay across all platforms.

rainslacker1677d ago

It's not a beta program anymore. A publisher or developer just has to apply through normal compliance standards now. been that way for a couple months now. Notice how few publishers and developers are jumping on the boat to get it done?

For all the complaints, and all the talk about how much devs and pubs wanted it, it was all bluster, where the reality in the industry was that most just don't care. There are more games getting it, but they're coming out through the normal process of when games had to apply for compliance acceptance. When it comes to things like this, it's a bureaucracy, and that will take time to show appreciable results. But in the end, most publishers still don't care. They may start implementing it if there is any appreciable demand....which despite all the bluster for the past couple years, actually isn't there, because people wanted to make it all about the console war.

gangsta_red1677d ago

"For all the complaints, and all the talk about how much devs and pubs wanted it, it was all bluster, where the reality in the industry was that most just don't care."

Says who, the complaints were still there from developers who wanted it and haven't you noticed by your own admission that now there seems to be no beta program and Sony is letting more and more developers implement crossplay between consoles.

This doesn't sound like an industry that doesn't really care now does it? It sounds like Sony finally letting crossplay happen because this is what the industry and developers wanted all along.

For all the yelling and screaming about how nobody really cares we still get articles announcing crossplay for games.

No one ever said it had to be for every game, or that it was a must have killer feature. Again, this is what fanboys and defenders were pushing as the norm in order to keep their fake console war going. It's funny to even think that something like crossplay, bringing gamers together, would even be something that would set them off and have to argue about.

rainslacker1677d ago

Right...and after all that, how many are scrambling to make it happen now that it's in open compliance? Even if every dev was on board, itd take time for it to show appreciable results. We've had 2-3 games in the last couple month announce they were doing it, and all those articles didnt get all this excitement surrounding them because most people chastising Sony were more concerned with that as opposed to results, and all these devs whose number could easily be counted on ones fingers just dont care as much as you've been insisting they do.

It does sound like an industry that doesn't care, because I'm not taking an insignificant percentage of vocal devs, but rather the industry as a whole. The end results may happen where its ubiquitous, but it's a fallacy to believe that they've all been clamoring for it just because MS said something. The industry doesn't turn on MS whim or marketing strategies. If they havent cared back when Sony made it possible over a decade ago, they didn't all start suddenly caring in the past two years. Some might, but MOST dont.

You were wrong about desire, and you still want to perpetuate the myth that it's highly in demand. You ignore when results are seen, and arent even up to date on recent developments. Your purpose has been clear for a long time.

Counterpoint: valid excuse, the game is platform exclusive.

Kabaneri1678d ago

Mobile/Switch should not play with XB/PS/PC players because they have a huge disadvantage in graphics, controls, and frame rates.

Hungryalpaca1678d ago

So do Pc players using 5 year old machines against state of the art...
