Design Renders Of Potential PS5 SSD Cartridges Unveiled

From PSU: "Design renders for the PS5's potential SSD storage cartridges have been released and they look quite plausible. What do you think?"

waverider1617d ago

Well this look like the way to extend the storage of the PS5. They dont want to lose the speed of the SSD, so it will be connected like a cartridge.

isarai1617d ago

SSDs already connect "like a cartridge" and i really doubt that's what this patent is for.

bouzebbal1615d ago (Edited 1615d ago )

I hope they end up using something standard.. not to end up with something overpriced like vita saving cards

1615d ago
SkatterBrain1614d ago (Edited 1614d ago )

Remember Everyone you dont Blow on the connectors to get it to work, that just adds spit and makes the contacts rust and makes the connection worse , use alcohol on qtips to clean instead

SkatterBrain1614d ago

I wish these had screens like the Dreamcast Memory Cards, it was fun playing mini games on the memory cards

Wtf kind of SSD are you using that don't plug in like a cartridge

CP_Company1617d ago

just make a price good, don't try to squeeze every penny just in the name of squeezing.

Atom6661617d ago

Looking at the inflated prices we went through with 360 HDDs and Vita memory cards tells me we should be prepared to get squeezed.

DarXyde1615d ago

Assuming this is a storage solution... it would appear that Sony is seriously trying to launch this thing at a comfortable price.

Which has me thinking: assuming their goal is to squeeze us on price, I wonder if they're planning to deliver some seriously powerful hardware (perhaps more than we were expecting) at a loss and recuperate sooner cost via much needed storage accessories. I don't know a single person who got through this generation without upgrading their storage, honestly.

Perhaps Sony is looking to cash on on that again. Given the PS5 tech, studio acquisitions, project development, cuts to price and improved offering of PS Now, and PSVR2 incoming, I think that squeezing us is a highly probable outcome. In the form of proprietary storage, online services, and the high likelihood of increased game prices.

ProjectVulcan1615d ago (Edited 1615d ago )

If Sony are moving from generic hard drives to a custom style interface then it isn't a good thing, and you're about to get ripped off hard.

neoandrew1614d ago

Well if it will be just an easy ssd package for quick replacement then i see no reason we will not have some third party cases for ssds.

Neonridr1615d ago

Considering this is a proprietary solution, you can almost guarantee that the price will be higher than conventional means. Even simple things like branded external hard drives sold for considerably more than regular ones.

lellkay1614d ago

@DarXyde

I have not upgraded my PS4 or Xbone storage and have survived on 500GB since launch of both of them.

silvacrest1614d ago

Survived.....sounds like you had to do some juggling to to make that 500GB stretch.

I took steps with my launch PS4 to make sure i didnt have to do that, my 3TB drive was great

in 2020 with a PS5, i just think by default no juggling should be required.

lellkay1614d ago

@silvacrest

I simply uninstall games i'm not playing. Never caused me any trouble.

no_more_heroes1617d ago

What if the games shipped on SSDs? Where all DLC could download to the game SSD itself.

isarai1617d ago

Then they'd be expensive as hell

no_more_heroes1616d ago

True. Their prices are coming down a lot though, so maybe by the generation after this one they'd be able to start doing something like that. You can find a 120GB SSD on sale for $19.99 these days.

sprinterboy1615d ago

How much would a 100gb game be on a ssd cartridge roughly if they went that way? Serious question, not being a jerk.

ChrisW1615d ago

512Gb Micro SD cards aren't very expensive either...

Neonridr1615d ago

if Switch cartridges are supposedly expensive enough, I don't even want to think of the price of proprietary external cartridges going up to 3TB in size.

ProjectVulcan1615d ago

Games could ship on SD cards, a 64GB card is not that expensive these days especially wholesale. $5 a pop for a decent card with 80MB/s read, higher than a high spec Bluray drive.

Many games would still fit on such a card. Bigger games would need 128GB cards and that would drive up the cost significantly.

Discs are still going to be cheaper no matter what.

ocelot071614d ago

Jesus not a chance lol. Just look at the Switch publishers are shaving costs by only putting a portion of the game on the cards and getting the users to download the rest so the publishers don't have to spend more money on higher capacity cards.

Brave_Losers_Unite1614d ago

That would be so bad for the environment.

rainslacker1614d ago

I'd hope not. Any non optical.storage medium is costly. Even if they managed to make them cheap, a optical disc cost less than a couple bucks to manufacture, including the case and book. Carts, or mini ssd drives like this, cost a lot more, and too many publishers opt for smaller versions, often accompanied by large update patches, basically not delivering the whole game. Stuff like this also has its pricing heavily influenced by outside factors that revolve around the production of the chips themselves. Back when Pentium processors first launched, memory prices skyrocketed due to demand for new style if chips, and the largest factory to make them burning down, greatly straining the supply line. It's one reason why optical media became so popular in the first place.

Chip based media would also be considered an electronic, which would fall under tariff guidelines, which can raise the price. Optical media doesnt fall.into this category, and can be made in almost every country or region to reduce overall distribution prices.

The idea of games delivered on SSD is great in terms of performance, but the logistics and price makes it less appealing, since that price is passed onto the consumer. If games are going to cost more, I'd rather that money go to the publishers and devs and the retail outlets which sell them.

those remember me the good old unbreakable Atari cartridges, snes, Genesis, really I wouldn't mind cartridges make a comeback I mean imagine instant gaming like the old days but with next gen visuals, that would be awesome imo.

silenthillstrangler1615d ago

That would defeat the purpose of the new ssd tech Sony has in the ps5.

DarXyde1615d ago

Not if you're a digital gamer.

1615d ago
Neonridr1615d ago

you realize that the Switch basically uses cartridges right? Just a smaller form factor.

1614d ago
kayoss1614d ago

"...old unbreakable Atari cartridges, snes, Genesis..." Unbreakable?? You dont remember blowing into these cartridges to try to get them work do you?

Wulfer1614d ago (Edited 1614d ago )

I do, so glad Sony wants to go back to this since they were the company that tried to tell Nintendo fans cartridges were old, out of date, expensive and they couldn't hold as much as other storage devices!

SinisterKieran1615d ago

a 1tb+ SSD :/ that sounds super expensive.
unless things have changed and i don't know its actually cheap.

Giblet_Head1615d ago (Edited 1615d ago )

Depending on the brand they're not as bad they use to be. Now 1TB and above M.2 SSDs...that'll burn a hole in your wallet.

rainslacker1614d ago

I brought one for 80 bucks about 6 months ago.

Yoko Taro Passes Respect; Says Stellar Blade Is "Much Better" Than Nier: Automata

Stellar Blade's creative director, Hyung Tae Kim, has also claimed that the game is deeply inspired by Nier: Automata.

shadowhaxor5h ago

I feel like Yoko is downgrading Automata because he has expressed multiple times he'd like to revisit the universe, but Squenix hasn't been keen about it. We know he loves 2B and would love to take her out for another spin, so maybe this is how he gets the company to think about it.

gold_drake4h ago

u do realise that Square made Nier a franchise after Automata right?

Taro is downplaying it cause hes not a snob like most of the directors that think their games are gods gifts to the human race.

he said the same thing when being interviewed during the development of Automata too, that he couldnt have done it without the devs.

hes just a humble guy rly.

shadowhaxor4h ago

I mean, Neir existed before Automata with both OG Niers and Drakenguard. I don't count NieR Replicant, since it's a remake of the OG games. Sure, we have Reincarnation, which is still stuck on mobile devices (quite a damned shame). I just remember Taro saying he'd love to revisit Automata if Square Enix lets him. I do recall there was supposed to be a sequel to Automata, but it wasn't confirmed and I'd imagine it was just for Reincarnation.

Enjoy Taro, he seems like a cool guy, who loves the ladies and is humble. But damn, don't put down one of your masterpieces.

isarai11m ago

I get he's giving them some credit, but i strongly disagree based on the demo. I honestly don't think any aspect of it feels good, it's not bad, it's just kinda ok but definitely a little jank. Also the souls like formula it is adopting does not help it imo. I was looking forward to this for years, now im just kinda let down honestly 🫤

Koei Tecmo Revises Forecast After Rise Of The Ronin & Other Game Sales Underperform

Koei Tecmo has revised its financial forecast for the current fiscal year after Rise of the Ronin and other games sales underperformed.

TwoPicklesGood5h ago(Edited 5h ago)

Sales projections have been dropped by 11% and operating income by 28%. Software sales are missing the intended target by the equivalent of $70 million. Ouch!

Obscure_Observer4h ago

Going exclusive with Playstation turn out to be yet another bad decision in this case.

It´s not the PS4 era anymore and the new PS Plus is clearly taking its tool on games sales on PS5 too.

Not nearly as harsh as Gamepass on Xbox mind you, but clearly strong enough to have a negative impact on gaming companies perception on exclusivity with one platform going forward. Especially regarding AAA games.

purple1012h ago

When you say “ yet another bad decision in this case”

Doesn’t that mean there’s. Whole host of other bad decisions to be able to say “yet another”

Which others are terrible I’m a ps fan, but still want to hear

shaenoide1h ago

Or maybe the game isn't as good as it should be to be released on this timeframe

CPTN MITCHELL1h ago

Another bad decision 😂the game is trash and if you think that releasing on the Xbox platform would help them you're out of your damn mind. Xbots don't buy games gameass is the welfare of gaming

Eonjay1h ago

This is incorrect. The title says its Rise of Ronin but the press release doesn't say that. They could (and seem to be) referring to multiple titles. Also, if sales were down, it wasn't because of PlayStation exclusivity but rather average scores.

Obscure_Observer1h ago

@purple101

"Which others are terrible I’m a ps fan, but still want to hear"

According to reports:

Babylon´s Fall, Forspoken, Foamstars, FF: XVI and lastly FF: Rebirth and Rise of Ronin, all of those games underperformed in some level despite the technical quality and critical acclaim.

1h ago
savedsynner44m ago

Rise of the Ronin also released the same day as the bigger profile Dragon's Dogma 2...plus, it was a solid game but not a hit.

LucasRuinedChildhood20m ago(Edited 6m ago)

"Babylon´s Fall, Forspoken, Foamstars, FF: XVI and lastly FF: Rebirth and Rise of Ronin, all of those games underperformed in some level despite the technical quality and critical acclaim."

Babylon's Fall literally has a 41 on Metacritic. lol. What are you talking about?
Forspoken: 59/64
Foamstars: 57

FF16 and FF7R still sold a lot.

SquareEnix once claimed that Tomb Raider (2013) was a financial failure despite being a massive hit.

"Underperform" is their catchphrase. Their expectations over the last few console generations have been a bit absurd. Some other examples I found: https://www.neogaf.com/thre...

The association you're trying to create doesn't actually make sense. This stuff was going in for many years before GamePass or a PS Plus catalog. They sold off all of their non-Japanese studios too.

Anyone can create a narrative when you exclude context. For example, Final Fantasy 13 sold 1 million on PS3 and X360 in its opening week while FF16 sold 3 million on PS5 in the same timeframe.

Rise Of The Tomb Raider is genuinely the only SquareEnix game where the sales completely imploded by being exclusive to one console.

Rise of the Ronin hasn't even been out a month yet?

koga881h ago(Edited 1h ago)

Ronin picked a really bad time to release. It arrived a week before Dragon's Dogma 2 and was blown out of the water in pretty much every way.

Eonjay1h ago

They probably aren't talking about Rise of Ronin. They article makes it look like they are. But that isn't disclosed in the release.

1h ago
45m ago
Lexreborn22h ago

I fully plan to get rise of the ronin, but not until after I finish FF7R. I’m also not getting Stellar blade right away either, I’m just not rushing to buy games and/or finish them fast.

I have been enjoying taking my time lately in games versus rushing to say I played the latest release.

LoveSpuds1h ago

I am in a similar spot squire, I picked up Dragons Dogma 2 and want to put that to bed before picking up Ronin.

Can't help but think that this is another example of reviewers being out of touch with gamers, as every person I know who' have played it loved it.

GoodGuy091h ago

The game should've came out multiplatform. And it came out in the middle of many other games like rebirth, granblue, persona 3, and the upcoming stellar blade. Not to mention reviews were also a bit underwhelming. There was just way too many games for the first few months of this year which is good but also bad for everyones wallet and time lol.

bRuud831h ago

It looks like people are not buying games anymore. Just too many releases in a short time.
