Nintendo Switch exclusives make no sense in 2020

Nintendo Switch exclusives are the order of the day for Nintendo, but that may not be enough to make waves as the market shifts around them.

Exclusives are what gives each system its identity, what sets them apart from the others.

AnubisG1518d ago

Certain individuals keep pushing this agenda that exclusives should be no more and they don't make sense not realizing that it would kill platforms and will leave one standing which will be the PC.

S2Killinit1518d ago

Exactly. Also, it seems that exclusives are only bad when it comes to making them. But when its an exclusive game behind a streaming service’s walled garden, its not a problem anymore.

Fluttershy771517d ago

@S2Killinit well because making them takes a lot of effort and money, you could end up with something really cool, or something terribly bad and boring. It's a risk

Fake Zelda with tech demo puzzles doesn’t make sense either. Where were you guys then?

Muzikguy1517d ago (Edited 1517d ago )

Exactly. Exclusives matter and always will. Ones that say otherwise are lying because they'd take them too if they had them for themselves.

@S2

You are right about that one

rainslacker1517d ago

The company making an exclusive is the one that can decide when and where they want to release it. There really is nothing more to it beyond that. Exclusives that get paid for just to keep them off other platforms, which is usually just timed exclusives, are distasteful, because I feel it's done just to make money on behalf of the publisher rather than trying to bring it to the fans, but it is what it is.

Don't pretend you wouldn't love to be able to play all nintendo games on your ps5, in full quality on your 4k tv.

Felix_Argyle_Catbro1517d ago

PC should be the only platform tbh.

andydalum1517d ago

Except not everyone who plays on consoles would play on PC regardless of if the games were also on PC. Personally I like the convenience of consoles and having it separate from my computer. I'm aware you can use a xbox controller on PC which is one of the huge things i like about xbox but i don't want to have to worry about drivers, upgrading hardware, updating software, worrying about PC crashing and can't play the games. Those are a few off the top of my head. Why is it hard to believe that some people just flat out prefer consoles over PC.

Exclusives are a large aspect of a system's identity. There is also the gaming network, the players profile, backwards compatibility, subscription services, streaming services,, the firmware/OS, and the physical capabilities of the storage, CPU/GPU, and memory of the system that help give it identity.

Considering how well Nintendo Switch exclusive titles sell right now, this is one of the most laughable things I've ever seen.

Fluttershy771517d ago

Nintendo is in the business of making a High Quality product and earning tons of money... it's almost logical, right?

“ The Switch is doing gangbusters now, but it’s still a console, and there’s no guarantee that this next generation hinges on putting boxes in front of TVs.”

Ugh 😑

Sometimes in gamer world you get these ideas that some push to suit a narrative. e.g. 'exclusives are immoral' -normally because their favourite console is lacking in them.

I don't have a Switch (I would get one if I had more time to play) so I say this without the bias of an owner who loves it - the Switch's exclusives such as Zelda, Mario and Pokemon are triple-A quality products that drive hardware sales. They are the reason Switch is now the second best selling console this generation despite being launch 3.5 years after PS4 & XBO.

Sure it be nice to play Zelda in 4K on Xbox Series X or PS5 or PC, but they are Nintendo owned product and if a person truly wants those games they will put their money where their mouth is and buy the correct console to play them on - and that suits Nintendo just fine!

The premise here is fundamentally flawed. People aren't buying Switch for 3rd parties. People won't keep buying Switches if Nintendo ceases 1st party output like the author opines. I have 3rd party titles on mine, and a bunch of indies, but if there were no "Nintendo games" on this thing, I'd never have bought it.

And the sales charts reflect this. Nintendo 1st party dominates the sales charts generally, and a Switch-only top ten chart is usually 100% 1st party.

Sony, which is largely considered the most "balanced" between 1st and 3rd party is lucky to see 2-3 1st party titles at the top of its list by comparison.

So, no, exclusives for Nintendo is the only thing that does make sense for them right now and for the foreseeable future. If they ever dip out of hardware, they'll be the biggest 3rd party publisher out there. But for now, their 1st party is the driving force behind a very successful console ecosystem.

The Wood1518d ago

You get a plus just for using the word 'opines' on top of your comment. This narrative of less exclusives means more 'gamer friendly' is nonsense

rainslacker1517d ago

I brought mine because it was where most of those niche Japanese games I like to play are going since the Vita was discontinued. But I've always had a Nintendo portable for as long as I remember for the JRPG action on it, and while Nintendo is doing good there with their own output since the 3DS, most of those games were 3rd party.

I do however believe that Nintendo exclusives are a big draw for a good number of people. Namely their big franchises, and Pokemon.

Atom6661517d ago

You kind of illustrated my point. I also have a Vita with a large number of niche games, 3rd parties, and indies.

But Switch passed Vita's lifetime sales in basically a year. Without Nintendo's 1st party, I don't think that would have been possible.

When we see Pokemon sell 15 million copies within two months, I don't understand how you write an article saying Nintendo exclusives "make no sense."

rainslacker1517d ago

Yeah. I didn't mean to discount Nintendo's first party. Just that it's not why I brought mine.:)
