Resident Evil 3 Remake review | PC Gamer

Both the Nemesis and Raccoon City are massively underused in this disappointing step back for the series.

NecrumOddBoy1481d ago

"After the imaginative, tradition-defying Resident Evil 7, and the sublimely polished, playable Resident Evil 2, this is a massive leap backwards for the series. The Nemesis is wasted—a bit player in its own game, neutered by its chronic lack of purpose. There are barely any puzzles and you're rarely given the chance to wander off the beaten path."

Ooohhh. Did Capcom rush this one?

pwnmaster30001481d ago

I mean so far it’s getting pretty good reviews, so I doubt it.

solideagle1481d ago

yea but compared to RE2 meta which is 91% this is just 80%. I was surprised to see 80 on meta.
https://www.metacritic.com/...

NecrumOddBoy1481d ago

Like solid eagle said, 80% means there are a lot of lower 60-70 scores that counter the 90s. We aren't saying 80% is bad at all. It's the wording that I noticed. Saying this game lacks puzzles and that Nemesis is less scary that Mr X raises an eyebrow.

mikeslemonade1480d ago

RE3 should have waited for the new consoles. PS4 and Xbox One holding back the game.

kreate1480d ago (Edited 1480d ago )

I want Resident Evil 2 Part 2. Not Resident Evil 3.

I would be perfectly happy if Resident Evil 3 played exactly like RE2, but w more ammo and more zombies.

The Demo wasn't very good. And Jill looks like shit. And her attitude annoys me.

PyroMessiah861480d ago

I'm seeing mostly 6's and 7's. Seems rushed, I called it months ago.

CrimsonWing691481d ago

Not according to IGN that gave it a 9/10.

This is why game reviews are a joke. Too much opinion drives the final score and then you have people who live or die by reviews making their decision to purchase the game or not based on this.

Razmiran1481d ago

Well, a review is the reviewers opinion on the game, nothing more

CrimsonWing691481d ago (Edited 1481d ago )

@Razmiran

And that’s the problem. It’s shouldn’t be scored solely based on opinion. What’s the point of a review then? Just making a purchasing decision based on an opinion or should there be, oh I don’t know, facts and juxtaposition comparisons made by games in the same genre that raise the bar on similar games?

Yea you’re right, reviews are unfortunately just some opinion, but that’s not what a review should be. Go ahead and look up the definition and google opinion vs review.

Don’t ge me wrong, there’s absolutely a place for an opinion in a review, it’s just not what you solely base the score and criticism around. Because let’s be real if that the case then negative reviews for games like The Last of Us or any other objectively good game would be considered valid... at that point what the hell is the point of a review?

babadivad1481d ago

@Razmiran

A reviewer should rate a game on what's objectively good or bad about the game. otherwise they are just a rando giving their opinion. If you are just going to give an opinion, what the fuck are they paying you for. Any asshole can have an opinion. You are paid to give objective reasoning why a certain game is good or bad.

Razmiran1480d ago

There are no "objectively good and bad things about games" what some like some others hate

CrimsonWing691480d ago (Edited 1480d ago )

@Razmiran

Of course there are objective elements/facts to review in games:

Graphics
Controls
Audio
Replayability
Etc.

You also use juxtaposition for comparison amongst similar games in the genre that have “raised the bar”.

You’re not going to win the argument that reviews are or should be just purely opinion.

Go ahead and look up the difference between opinion and review. You have resources.

yoshatabi1480d ago

Too much of an opinion drives a review? You do realize that's what a review is right? An opinion

generic-user-name1480d ago

You're way off here. All reviews are opinion, you list stuff like graphics and audio as things that can be measured objectively, but even photorealistic games can look bad if you don't like the art design, a subjective opinion.

But even if we go by that list, graphics, controls, audio, replayability, there's still stuff like story, pacing, music, challenge and fun to consider which can only be judged subjectively and can kill a score, even if the audio and graphics are perfect.

CrimsonWing691480d ago

@generic

Dude, I’ve already established opinion is fine to be injected into a review it’s complete bullsh*t to pass off a review purely on opinion.

My god just google this for chrissake.

Razmiran1480d ago

"You’re not going to win the argument that reviews are or should be just purely opinion."

Sorry dude, already have
No matter how much you whine, I'm right and you are wrong

porkChop1480d ago

@Crimson

As someone who's actually studied and worked legit print journalism, let me tell you that you don't know wtf your talking about. Reviews are 100% based in opinion. You cannot review something based on what's objectively good/bad, because all those elements have variables and aspects that are subjective.

borneFROMblood1480d ago

just watch Easy Allies, that's the only review you need. A huge resident evil fan from EZA reviewd RE3Remake but he never gives extra points cause hes bias, they are very constructive and judgmental even if their favorite franchise has flaws. He gave it 8.5 , so im not concerned at all.

Hungryalpaca1480d ago

Congrats you just described a review. Do you want a cookie?

babadivad1480d ago (Edited 1480d ago )

@porkChop

Professional reviews aren't or at least shouldn't be pure opinion.

There are things that ARE objectively bad about video games, books, or movies.

For games:
Are the controls responsive
Are there any game crashes
Graphical errors
Etc.

For books:
Has there been good world building?
Do the characters you created behave consistently, if they do change dramatically, did the author do a good job of explaining WHY that character is acting uncharacteristic in this scenario?
Are there plot holes in the story(this could go for games, movies, and books)

I was going to list things about movies as well but you get the point.

I remember when games journalist used to go through things that made a game objectively good or bad FIRST, then go into their subjective views on the game.

Also, you could agree with the person's subjective view because they used to have reviewers who specialized in a particular genre.

Now, there are so many games "journalist" who don't even know how to play games at all, let alone the style of game they are reviewing.

It used to be a requirement to be a gamer to be a game journalist, not anymore.

That got more soapboxie than I intended, haha.

Point being, there are things in a game that is objectively good or bad. Professional reviews shouldn't be just opinion pieces.

LOGICWINS1481d ago

"Ooohhh. Did Capcom rush this one?"

Did you play the game yourself to form your own opinion?

babadivad1481d ago

Except for the underused Nemesis part, that was pretty much what RE 3 was. There wasn't any back tracking or puzzle solving like you'd seen in previous RE titles. It was a mad dash or escape from Racoon City with a killing machine hounding you along the way.

It was the first RE game that I didn't need a book to play. I just picked it up and ran right through it.

DeadManMMX1480d ago

They didn't rush this at all it was originally supposed to come out with RE2 but they ran out of time. That's why it's coming out only a year later.

CorndogBurglar1480d ago

Thank you. I thought I remembered that also. I even replied to someone up above with this.

They were working on RE3 Remake at the same time as RE2 Remake. So I really don't see how this was rushed. More like they just made some poor decisions.

CorndogBurglar1480d ago

Well, I don't see how it was rushed. They were working on it at the same time as RE2 Remake. In fact, the original plan was to release them both at the same time, if I'm not mistaken

So I don't think it was rushed. I think it was just a series of bad decisions.

FinalAeonX1481d ago

There's always one. 80/100 on metacritic - 45 reviews so far.

KwietStorm_BLM1481d ago

If the *average* is at 80, how is there always *one*? lol Just as much as there are questionable reviews, there are people who jump to defend a game they didn't even play themselves, or they defend other high scores for no reason other than the fact that they are high scores.

-Foxtrot1481d ago

That's not "one"

It's RE3...coming off the amazing RE2

I'm not going to say it's shit, it sounds far from it but from what people are saying, despite being good it's not up the the same standards aswell the RE2 Remake

Now THAT is a massive shame, it should have been the same, if not better

It seems rushed.

Eamon1481d ago

Tbh, at the very least, RE3make coming out this quick allows for Capcom to concentrate on making Resident Evil 8 truly groundbreaking.

They've seen the high success of RE2make. They are now fully aware that not just fans but mainstream gamers want a RE game that is truly survival horror and not the action-fest Michael Bay nonsense of RE6.

-Foxtrot1481d ago

The issue is Eamon, while true (hopefully) they are going to make RE8 first person and I really don't want to see that.

I'm lucky we have these remakes in third person but I didn't want this one rushed out the door, I would have preferred they took their time

borneFROMblood1480d ago (Edited 1480d ago )

it is not rushed tho, RE3 was in development at the same time with RE2.
It's just different approach just like Original RE3 was.
And just like in 90's RE2 was better than RE3 but it didnt make the OG RE3 bad.
Same story here, people are just spoiled by those 90/100 scores that even an amazing game with 80 is a disappointment to them. There are games with 65 that some people still enjoy and love.

#NotEverythingHasToBeA10

borneFROMblood1480d ago

Not everything has to be 10/10.
80/100 is a great game, if its not 90+ it doesnt mean its bad.

Rambokind1481d ago

This is an outlier review. They're just too harsh

DafunkyRebel1480d ago

No they aren’t this game isn’t as great as the major reviews make it out to be

CorndogBurglar1480d ago

If its an "outlier review" then how is the average at 80?

Hungryalpaca1480d ago

It’s literally half the game of the one that came before dude.

1481d ago Replies(1)
mrsolidsteel201481d ago

That seems like an extremely poor choice on Capcom's part to take out key areas in the game....such as the clock tower and the graveyard.

I've could have sworn that I read somewhere that they were going to keep the grave digger in this remake......

Oh well, I still can't wait until this Friday!

Lego games are always fun... and that is one I had not played before.

isarai37d ago

It's always the ine they leave out if the headline that interests me most 😅 DBZ Kakarot, been waiting for this to pop up on plus

Kyizen36d ago

I completely missed that DBZ Kakarot was in the group, I have midnight sons and RE3 so was kinda disappointed.

StormSnooper36d ago (Edited 36d ago )

Yea, it’s my last chance to play my childhood, now that he is gone. I’m watching way too many good anime at the moment to rewatch the series but this is the perfect excuse to visit that universe.

jznrpg37d ago

Never played Midnight Suns and probably won’t anytime soon but maybe someday. Pretty good month not great not horrible. I used to love sports games when I was a kid but that was before the monetization they went through and now I avoid them.

phoenixwing36d ago (Edited 36d ago )

Not all sports games are like that but ea and 2k games are definitely

DarXyde36d ago

Definitely give Midnight Suns a download if you've got Plus.

It's great.

phoenixwing26d ago

I agree midnight sun's is fun

Eonjay37d ago (Edited 37d ago )

Heard a lot of good things about Midnight Suns! Also looking forward to Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot and will probably download 2K24 as well.

LucasRuinedChildhood37d ago (Edited 37d ago )

Not a great month for me. Will give Midnight Suns a go.

I've never played Jak & Daxter: The Lost Frontier. Might give it a go although it's supposed to just be okay.

Never played a Phoenix Wright game before, so might try Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy.

SonyStyled36d ago

The Lost Frontier isn’t a true Jak and Daxter game. If you haven’t played them before I’d highly advise skipping The Lost Frontier and spending your time on the trilogy. The real Jak games are developed by Naughty Dog

LucasRuinedChildhood36d ago

I'm a big Jak & Daxter fan. Just not that into portables so I never picked this one up (didn't know there was a PS2 port when I was younger).

Resident Evil 3 Remake is one of the best RE games, actually

Resident Evil 3 Remake is one of the most debated games in Capcom’s survival horror series, but it’s just as good as the remake of Resident Evil and 2019’s RE2.

CrimsonWing69211d ago (Edited 211d ago )

It’s a good game, but a terrible Remake.

I would choose the original over this Remake any day of the week. More areas, more enemies, more bosses, choice options, better unlockables, and I could go on and on.

If you go into this Remake as it’s own game and not compare it to what it’s, uh, Remaking, then yea it’s a solid game.

But I do not consider the Remake portion of this game to be “good,” like at all.

seanpitt23210d ago

The remake was inferior to RE2R in everyway capcom even said the B team made it the physics was so dumbed down it was such a big disappointment the A team that made RE2 was busy making RE4R

Walalon209d ago

And the whole idea of Nemesis "looking for you" was ripped off entirely making this Remake more than a knock off lol

solideagle210d ago (Edited 210d ago )

Didn't Capcom themselves
say the same thing that they will improve Quality and make Remake Lengthy or something along the same lines because RE3R was not received as good as RE2R critically

-Foxtrot210d ago

Not only that they literally snatched the RE4 off them and restarted development within the main team. That’s how bad the fallout was.

They tried to be cheap and it blew up in their face

It makes me super sad to think of how amazing RE3 could have been

We could have had hubs within the city to explore, to fully experience the Raccoon City downfall in all its glory…but they rushed it.

SyntheticForm210d ago

That boss fight on Inferno. Absolutely no.

GoodGuy09211d ago

Sure it was scripted quite a bit but I enjoyed it. Really good replayability as well.

Dandizzle210d ago (Edited 210d ago )

When I look back at re2 re4 and re4 remakes to which I beat all of them at launch. Re3 is the one I recall having more fun more of the time. Re2 and re4 get over stressful on harder difficulties.

Re4 remake was also great, but I liked re3 remake better

NovusTerminus211d ago

I can't comment on the "remake" aspect as I never played 3, didn't like tank controls even back then.

But as far as the remake goes as a game, I've got like 40 hours in it and played it far more then the 2 remake. I absolutely enjoyed the combat engine and dodge mechanic.

nommers210d ago

I gotta agree with the replay value of the game. Despite the cut areas it still feels like you’re going through more areas than RE2 remake. That and the Nemesis isn’t as annoying as the Tyrant.

BlackTar187210d ago

lol you can beat the game in under 3 hours on your first thorough and under 45 mins on your second without even trying to rush. The game has less content then some demos.

nommers210d ago

@BlackTar187

Don’t exaggerate so hard. You’ll live longer.

BlackTar187209d ago

If you look up playtime you can see most people beat it between 3-5 hours on the first playthrough and the trophy for sprinter which is beat the game in under 2 hours is a high percentage trophy compared to any other speed run trophies. So no I won’t change what I said. I’d wager with the infinite rpg you could get that even lower then 45 mins. My actual save says 57 mins

nommers209d ago

@BlackTar187

You can beat a lot of games in under 3 hours as a speed runner. Who cares.

Average time play through says about 6 hours, but for full completion it says 20 1/2 hours. First time through for me I took my time and took about 8 hours. Then again I’m not trying to race through the game. That’s about the same time for RE2 remake for a first time through, which even with multiple paths doesn’t have much extra content outside any given run.
