Sony's Jim Ryan: “We are going to launch PS5 this holiday and we're going to launch globally"

Gameindustrybiz:

"A great deal has happened since we last spoke. Terrible things happening in the world, which puts everything that you and I do into context. You have to measure all this conversation against that."

Hmmm....this sounds like it's gonna be expensive base on what he said.

ArchangelMike1420d ago

Probably more expensive than what they originally planned, given the current pandemic and lockdown situation.

b163o11420d ago

If the product justifies its price, I don't have a problem with that...

morganfell1420d ago (Edited 1420d ago )

Maybe its just words. Or Sony may be employing a tactic and nothing more. If you think it might be expensive and it comes in at midrange you think its cheaper than you expected. Maybe the competition looks at their own price differently.

Kumakai1420d ago

More expensive b/c of the architecture. There’s a reason they shaved off as much of the drive storage as they could. Not even a full tb - b/c the NVMe is expensive. They put all that money into a blazing fast ssd that in the real world end will produce near invisible differences - bc ms employed different techniques to get a similar result and real world applications never get 100% efficiency.

sampsonon1420d ago

smart, so they think people "given the current pandemic and lockdown situation" will have that kind of money? Millions lost their jobs and are lining up for food. Good luck with sales

b163o11420d ago (Edited 1420d ago )

@Kumakai

Where are you getting this info about "near invisible differences"? Majority of the Devs have praised Sony's SSD, going as far as calling it a "GameChanger". The only developer who's tried to downplay the SSD is the guys who made the horrible game scorn..

Here I run into you again, kid, what drivel your posts are. They're not even funny, just sad.

Surprised you didn't compare the new Xbox to the PS1 to show how amazing MS is just like your comment criticising Sony and their handheld consoles by comparing the Vita against the Switch.

$499 will be the price for both next gen consoles. Originally I had thought it would be $399 but with everything going on prices went up and both companies can't take $100-200 loss per console sold

Shikoku1420d ago

The xbone series X won't be less than 600$ MS isn't going to eat 200$ per unit at minimum.

neutralgamer19921420d ago

If they come at that price with no major exclusives than it's over before it even starts

I don't see either company going over $499 no matter how much cost they have to eat and I still think Sony will price ps5 lower than Xbox series x. Rumor has it they won't announce a price till August

rainslacker1420d ago

I think $499 will be tha max for either console, and I think MS may have been planning that as a target as they've been pushing it as a premium console.

I dont know if CV would have affected their manufacturing costs, because that would have been negotiated.

I dont know if any company wants to try for the $599 price point, regardless of losses.

If people go back to 2013, something like this was said along the lines of the PS4's pricing! Then Bombs started falling. Tbh I'm not concerned, because I know i'll be worth it.

Babadook71419d ago (Edited 1419d ago )

Jim Ryan; "I think the best way that we can address this is by providing the best possible value proposition that we can. I don't necessarily mean lowest price. Value is a combination of many things."

I think he means it will be cheap vs the capability. A good 'value' that doesn't target Switch pricing directly but offers more capability and targets the value proposition of XSX.

500 or 600 at best hell if they can charge 600 for ps3 why not the ps5 it way better.

anonymousfan1420d ago

PS3 pricing isn't something anyone should copy and I think Sony would have learned their lesson.

KeeseToast1420d ago

PS3 launch was 14 years ago. Prices change, just look how other electronics have increased since then. 599 today is not the same as it was in 2006

UnSelf1420d ago

Idc what they charge if the formula is high price = high performance

rainslacker1420d ago

I think the manufacturing costs are probably a wash between the consoles due to the variances in hardware. Each has some things that cost more, or less than the other console, with MS cost maybe being a bit more.

If either company went for $600, it would likely be that the other will also stay at that cost, or have the breathing room to have a higher price.

Basically, it's not so much a matter of if a console is priced high, but how its priced relative to the competition, and what each has value wise for that price point.

Sol4ris1420d ago

“”I think $499 will be tha max for either console, and I think MS may have been planning that as a target as they've been pushing it as a premium console. ””

Are you somehow implying that the PS5 is less premium than the XsX? Because for the last few weeks the whole *internet* is shouting the exact opposite.

Profchaos1420d ago

I think manufacturing costs are one small aspect there's thousands of hours poured into engineering the CPU architecture customisation along with the os which would be factored in to a final price Sony have to reclaim that cost over X years

rainslacker1419d ago

@Sol4ris

No, I'm saying that MS is promoting the XSX as a premium console. Almost every time they market it, it's about how it's a premium experience. I put forth no judgement on the validity of that claim for the purpose of this comment.

@Prof

There are, but the way businesses work, they've already spent that money. While in the real world, we do have to consider how much we spent before to ask ourselves if we're actually making money, businesses don't do that in the same way.

A great example is the one billion dollars MS put aside for the RROD thing. They did it all at once, so it would only impact that fiscal year. It caused a dip in the stocks, but subsequent years, they didn't have to report the actual money they spent on it as a line item.

R&D is done in the same way. 3-4 years of spending however millions of dollars were probably earmarked in the year that that actually began, which means it has no effect on the current year.

Profchaos1420d ago

In 2006 PS3 was state of the art and had a blue ray player and custom CPU architecture in the cell processor.
The price of the PS3 wasn't just hardware but the thousands of hours Sony poured into r&d to launch it.

The and CPU in the ps5 isn't anywhere near as complex sure there would still be lots of work involved in customising it but no where to the level of the cell.

But realistically looking at the timelines PS3 was a beast at launch so is the ps5 and so was the ps4.

EazyC1419d ago

The PS3's launch price was the most damage Sony ever did with a console, luckily they recovered massively but that launch was a problem.

JRH77831419d ago

PS3 launched during the recession... Everything was expensive then...

ArchangelMike1420d ago (Edited 1420d ago )

Well he's right that the best "value proposition" doesn't mean the lowest price. Reading between the lines (and drawing from previous Sony financial statements), I think Jim is aluding to the fact that the COVID19 pandemic has affected manufacturing prices, cost of components and shipping. So the "value proposition" of still going ahead with launching the PS5 during holiday 2020 has changed for Sony; ergo the price of the console has probably had to be revised upward of what was originally forecast.

I also wonder if he know's something about the price range that MS are planning to release the Series X, and if he is simply pre-empting a lower Series X price point. To be honest though, even if the price of the Series X is slightly less than a PS5, then it's a no brainer for me. The difference in price would have to be significant for me to reconsider.

Obscure_Observer1420d ago

In that case, good luck to Sony to try and sell an underpowered and overpriced console.

Mattrick had the same type of mentality. We all know how things turn out

-Foxtrot1420d ago

If you think the Xbox One awful reveal was just about price then you clearly didn't understand the entire situation

Pretty sure it launched with Kinect aswell which made it more pricey.

Obscure_Observer1420d ago (Edited 1420d ago )

@-Foxtrot

"Pretty sure it launched with Kinect aswell which made it more pricey."

I know that. You know that. But the average gamer only care about the final price. Same thing with the PS3. At that time, Sony were giving gamers a brand new Blu Ray player almost for free, yet, gamers and media in general only cared about to call it "overpriced".

Nyxus1420d ago

It's not underpowered.

averagejoe261420d ago

It must be so exhausting being a fanboy of the worst gaming company. You try so, so hard. I pity you.

XabiDaChosenOne1420d ago

"Same thing with the PS3."
And it STILL outsold the 360.
Series X has yet to prove that it will be running games significantly better to warrant a higher price tag.

Obscure_Observer1420d ago

@Nyxus

"It's not underpowered."

It is compared to the Series X.

neutralgamer19921420d ago (Edited 1420d ago )

Obsecure

Yeah telling ur customers they can't buy used games, must verify all games every 24 hours, having Kinect which spied on you and being $100 more had nothing to do with it. I am sure telling you customers if they aren't happy buy Xbox 360 had nothing to do with it

Games is what Jim Ryan is saying or did you miss where he said value proposition. So y will bring games only available on ps5 and have a much larger install base to appease to. Gamers who switched from 360 to PS4 and who got hooked on by excellent exclusives would want to play those sequels

Just take Xanax till June 4th and increase dosage after June 4th because next gen business is about to pick up. Ms has been talking since December 2019 about Xbox series x yet Sony in last 2 weeks has garnered more attention and are about to gain momentum

As a long time ps fan I know what power can do because PS3 was more powerful than Xbox 360 but Xbox 360 had games which were only available on Xbox 360

Like mass effect, Bioshock, halo 3, gears, dead rising, lost planet, saints row

These were only available on Xbox 360 so to now think all Xbox games will be made for Xbox one to Xbox series x and PC and people will buy series x you got to be kidding me

You keep your power argument that u make on every article and posts stats of series x. Sony has yet to reveal anything and Xbox fanboys along with Xbox executives are already freaking out going out of their way to give statements

State of play twice and both times Phil and Xbox team couldn't stop talking because they are desperate and are scared yes I said scared because they know what Sony is capable of. A year head start with 360 couldn't save them and that's with PS3 at $599

Next gen starts when we get next gen games which are only possible on next gen consoles and only one company will make such gaming experiences

Nyxus

It's not but on one side is running with that because that's all they have. They have nothing else to stand on besides that argument even though many developers have praised ps5. I trust mark Cerny over Phil Spencer and team Xbox any day of the week. One guy is very well respected and even help recruit kojima to Sony while the other guy has been with Xbox for a long time and has no track record

Well I am wrong he does have a track record of talking a lot without backing up that talk

Phil Spencer was there on Xbox 360, was there at launch of Xbox One, was running the company during Xbox One and now he is launching as the headman Xbox series X. Yet people blame Don matrick who if nothing else atleast got Xbox 360 to succeed while Phil has done nothing this whole generation but talk and talk from both sides

He was against exclusive content and timed exclusive content yet he is the one who is also signing very similar deals. He is so great at his job that he has had this whole Xbox fan base every year he hypes up right till next year wait till next year wait till next year and we are almost to next generation now

he has been talking since December 2019 and in the last 10 to 14 days Sony has done all the talking they needed to

Spicyram1420d ago (Edited 1420d ago )

1) "In that case, good luck to Sony to try and sell an underpowered and overpriced console."

2) "It's not underpowered."It is compared to the Series X."

At this point it's actually too easy, no point in kicking someone while they are down. You just shoot yourself in the foot. This is a tough time for you, we understand.

1420d ago
SyntheticForm1420d ago

I don't think you know what "underpowered" means - you're just throwing it out to agitate.

The PS5 isn't "underpowered" even when compared to Series X. Underpowered means underpowered and a two teraflop differential doesn't render the PS5 "underpowered."

Keep swinging though.

rainslacker1420d ago (Edited 1420d ago )

And assuming that scenario comes to pass, when they end up outselling MS, can we finally say that power doesn't matter

Also, under powered and less powerful are not the same thing. You are assuming MS specs are setting the standard, but that isnt the case. In fact, for the first year or two, MS min standard is what it was at the start of this gen.

neutralgamer19921420d ago

This is why we should be excited for next gen especially ps5 because they are focused on next gen

Question:One way to keep PS4 users engaged would be to make upcoming PS5 games playable on the older machine, just like Microsoft is proposing with its Xbox Series X games being playable on Xbox One. Yet Ryan says that's not something PlayStation is interested in doing.

Answer by him Ryan: "We have always said that we believe in generations. We believe that when you go to all the trouble of creating a next-gen console, that it should include features and benefits that the previous generation does not include. And that, in our view, people should make games that can make the most of those features.

"We do believe in generations, and whether it's the DualSense controller, whether it's the 3D audio, whether it's the multiple ways that the SSD can be used... we are thinking that it is time to give the PlayStation community something new, something different, that can really only be enjoyed on PS5."

SyntheticForm1420d ago

You also don't think anything through - you just fanboy. That often happens with them.

"good luck to Sony to try and sell an underpowered and overpriced console."

Sony are going to absolutely steamroll Microsoft in console sales, and you're wishing 'them' good luck as if they're in any kind of significant underdog position - they're the top dog.

Microsoft carries a much heavier burden in the form of quality first party output. You really think you should be wishing 'Sony' good luck? Let's be intellectually honest about the situation here; the anticipation for Sony's console is palpable for more people. For Microsoft's it's lukewarm, or, no better than alright.

Cut the fanboy stuff, and stop the ridiculous 'gushatory' sentiment over everything Microsoft because it's quite frankly, cheesy. You're never honest when you post - you just like to 'get the Sony guys' and it's really a nutty look.

Sunny_D1419d ago

The only thing underpowered are going to be those new Xbox games being developed along side the last gen Xbox one. Sony’s actually moving forward and actually giving us next gen games. MS is keeping y’all in the past.

Dragonscale1419d ago

He may also know that the Series X won't be cheap so they can be ok with going up in price as well.

I personally don't care what the price is. I'm getting a PS5

ArchangelMike1420d ago

I think this may actually closer to the actual situation.

AngelicIceDiamond1420d ago

Hardcore gamers made up their mind from the beginning. You and many here on the internet are day one buyers. But higher priced console will always be a hard sell to the long term buyers. Especially if the competition some how under cuts them. Not saying they will, I'm just saying in theory.

rainslacker1420d ago

Realistically, they can look at the parts and make an educated guess what it would cost to make, and Sony and MS are going to be looking at the same metrics on what demand will be at different price points. In the end though, these companies arent usually setting their price in comparison to the competition. They look at what they want to make, and if the market will accept that price.

rlow11420d ago

True, but if the economies in the world don't pickup then price will become a big factor in what parents and adults will be able to afford. Hell, could benefit the Switch or extend this gen much longer. It's really going to come down to what actually launching this year, early next, and price if the games are similar. But I agree if it's only a fifty-70 dollar difference and with Sony's huge installed base it might work. That said, where the economies of the world are at, is going to play a big part in the early days of the next gen.

ArchangelMike1420d ago

It must be a real balancing act for both Sony and Microsft in terms of how they devide to price their next gen consoles. The world is potentially facing another recession due to COVID. I gues it all comes down to how much of a loss their their willing to take on behalf of their share holders.

rainslacker1419d ago

If it were me, I wouldn't be looking at the short term in terms of the release and how the recession may effect the sales. No matter what, there will be enough people to buy whatever they can make within the launch window, even with a full on global depression.

What would be more problematic is the long term where higher price means that sales would stagnate quicker, and there would be less chance that people would spend as much per user. On top of that, if not enough people are buying enough games, it means publishers are making less games, which means they lose more on the licensing fees, and then of course their cut of digital sales, and all the other things that aren't directly tied to immediate sales of services, hardware, or software.

The unemployment will certainly effect those who may want the console but are not able to, but I don't think that's what these companies are going to be looking at when it comes to deciding the price of their console. When it comes down to it, they may feel that subsidizing costs wouldn't be as profitable for the long term, so they would maybe look at making sure they maximize their revenue in every possible way. They move away from the race to the bottom, and instead, promote the system as a better value. This was evidenced back when the PS3/360 released, when we were in a recession, and there was a lot of talk about how gaming was actually a better way to spend whatever money you had for entertainment due to cost per hour.

Former Blizzard President Suggests Players Should Have Option to Tip Developers

Former Blizzard president Mike Ybarra recently suggested an interesting concept that has sparked a debate among gamers - the idea of being able to tip developers after completing a game.

LG_Fox_Brazil5d ago

If I had a 100% way to be sure that this money would go to a fund or a reserve dedicated only to the guys who develop the games, be them designers, artists, programmers and so on, I could think about it.

But we all know that this 'tip' would only end up in a publisher's CEO pocket to buy a new yacht, so, no, I ain't tipping anyone anytime soon on this industry

neutralgamer19924d ago

Exactly these companies were raising money for good causes and gamers were donation and come to find out they are keeping a good chunk of be pie

PapaBop4d ago

Yeah tip your developer, 5% proceeds go to developer, 95% to the publisher or whoever. Isn't tipping for staff not making minimum wage? How about they just pay their developers properly and like you know, give them fair bonuses? Too much to ask from Blizzard these days, Kotick saw to that and is now laughing all the way to the bank.

MrDead4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

It's the t**ts at the top looking at ways to cut devs wages and get the players to tip them like waiting staff, and I'll guarantee a percentage is skimmed and kept by Activision Blizzard. This is 100% for shareholder and CEO playouts.

Popsicle4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

I have to agree with this. On the surface tipping devs sounds like a great idea, but in the end it leads to pay cuts and subsidization of pay. Tips then become an expectation or the devs “can’t make a living.” Lastly, especially in the US, tip culture has gotten out of control, and it serves as an excuse not to properly pay employees. Sounds good but doesn’t end well.

drizzom3d ago

@ Popsicle

I think your right on the nose with how much tipping has become rampant. Instead of it being a relationship directly between the customer and the developer or employee, it now has a middle man ingrained in the system. DoorDash is one example. It ends up becoming a metric where the company can measure 'just how much more money you are willing to part with' before raising the price on the main product.

1Victor4d ago

Uh so they’re trying triple dip or more we buy the game that they’re already withholding/cutting content for dlc we was told that season pass would help the developers thrive we felt for it.
Now on top of all that plus their sales bonus they want tips enough is enough whatever happens to you create/built a good game get a bonus for sales milestones you care about your game and community we reward you with more sales not for doing 3/4 of a game then save the other 1/4 for dlc and passes after

raWfodog4d ago

The 'tip' is me buying your game in the first place.

S2Killinit4d ago

Very well said. If it was possible to send the money to either the developer or some organization for the betterment of gaming, sure. But we all know that will not be the case.

Rynxie4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

No, it would go to those on the top. They will still fire developers, have a bunch of microtransactions, raise prices of games and so on.

Ireland is literally the first stop across the pond and we don't have a tipping culture. The only establishments here that would expect a tip are the tourist haunts that Americans visit. Other than that, you might tip in a restaurant as a sign of gratitude for great service and waiting staff would be paid a full wage anyway.

The Reason Sega Lost The 32-Bit War? The 32X, Says Yosuke Okunari

"The company was unable to focus enough on its main hope"

timeextension.com
ApocalypseShadow9d ago

Nope. Going back to the 32X as the reason Sega lost that generation doesn't go back far enough before the Saturn.

Sega executives need to blame themselves as to why Sega lost that generation. Not Saturn. Not 32X. Not Sega CD. Nope. Executives were the reason why. It wasn't the hardware. Those devices were either dropped early or released to soon resulting in a developer backlash the hurt the game catalog. They really shouldn't have been made at all because they should have planned their next move more carefully. It has nothing to do with the devices. Poor leadership decisions and lack of unity within the company are what happened.

Love how blame is always shifted away from what is the truth. Writing a book placing the blame on the 32X isn't the truth.

solideagle8d ago

I am pretty sure there are documentaries (Youtube) around it which highlights these points. I had Sega Mega drive and NES growing up but that's about it. I didn't even know there was a war going on between these companies but I do remember thinking why I can't play Sonic cartridge on Nintendo or Mario on Sega :D
