'I'm not stupid, Ronaldo had to win it' – is the Fifa Ballon d'Or too political?

Goal - Franck Ribery is the latest in a long line of footballers who have slammed football’s biggest award for not being a fair prize. Is the Frenchman right?

The story is too old to be commented.

the ballon d'or is a joke.
i think the last honest one was in 2009. ever since then its been either favouritism or politics.

there is no criteria on exactly what earns you the award. the voting process is also flawed. some people tend to vote for people they "like" more than which player was "better". a popularity contest if you will.

every year everyones reasoning for why X player won the trophy changes. one year its coz he won trophies, next year its coz he had the most goals, world cup performances dont matter, 4 years later it does. records matter in some years, other years they dont. etc etc. flip flop move the goal posts each time.

honestly, just do away with it. this trophy is slowly tarnishing and already bad image for FIFA. my suggestion, just keep the FIFA XI where a player gets a trophy for being the best in his position...but somehow i still think FIFA will find a way to balls that up.

Everything involving FIFA seems to be corrupt and a joke. That said, anything involving a subjective element of judgement will always be questionable eg look at boxing and points scoring - there always seems to be controversy about why judges give rounds to one boxer and not the other. Maybe we need some objective standards but they are too difficult to formulate. Fans will always vote for their favourite player (or to spite an opposing player); these clowns at FIFA will vote according to internal politics and what sponsors say (remember Messi's best player at World Cup?!).

I can see why people say it's not fair and agree to an extent that the process needs re-evaluating but at the end of the day, both Ronaldo and Messi are on a completely different level to everyone else in the world. I don't have the luxury of seeing Ribery play every week so can't comment on him personally but from what I've seen of him, he's a quality player but still not on the same level as Ronaldo and Messi.

It became all politics since 2013 where the voting extension scandal took place in order to give the award to Cristiano.

What is the argument against CR7 now?
What does Ronaldo have to do to deserve it?

KingPin3584d ago

main argument - he had a poor world cup and in a world cup year, someone who did great in a world cup/preferably a world cup winner should win the ballon d'or. its always been like that since 1990 i think...cant remember the exact year they started with that. but in 2010 they made an exception for a certain player, and now it looks like they wanna go back to doing that coz its "fair". since the world cup is the biggest trophy in a world cup year.

thats the reason platini is pushing so hard for neuer to win. wont be surprised if ronaldo gets cheated out of it really. if they can cheat players like xavi, iniesta and ribery, why not cheat ronaldo too.

FIFA is a joke. No way Ronaldo is the best football player.
Pepe should win, he is not an acrobat, he plays seriously.
