Estudiantes dominated possession in the opening stages but were struggling to create any clear opportunities. An awful drop-kick by Roberto Abbondanzieri almost gifted the hosts a goal but Juan Sebastian Veron's 40 yard effort was too weak to trouble the veteran keeper.
Shortly after, Veron tried his luck from 25 yards but Abbondanzieri parried his effort away and Fabiano Eller was on hand to boot the ball away from danger.
