Gerrard: Rooney needs to find goals

Skipper Steven Gerrard has admitted Wayne Rooney has to start delivering goal-power if England are to reach the latter stages of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™.

Gerrard is relishing linking up again with Rooney against Algeria in Cape Town tonight with the return of Gareth Barry meaning the Liverpool player will have more licence to roam forward. But he is aware Rooney has to start finding the net for his country after netting just once in eight internationals during the past 12 months.

Gerrard said: "Wayne needs a goal, of course. I said all the way through qualifying that, if we got to the World Cup, we'd need Wayne to be our top goalscorer. "We need him to score the goals to take us to the later stages of the tournament because he's our main player.

The story is too old to be commented.

England is full of international stars. no bother to even mentions the big names. Rooney is the best, but followed by many other good players

I think there are big names playing in England. But they play for other national teams. England has Ferdinand (injury), Lampard and Gerrard except from >Rooney. Lampard and Gerrard are to equal to play to getter.

Sure they have good players. But not as good as Spain. Rooney should play in la liga to be as good as Messi.

to messi as well, and I bet Messi will be an injury prone if he in England. Btw why should he go to Spain, a league with only two teams lol

passing the ball to him first? He can't defend and score at the same time can he? Especially when he has to cover for the incompetents he plays with.
