The Nintendo Switch has outsold the worldwide sales of the Xbox One, according to VGChartz estimates.

What a superb achievement for a fantastic little device. Nintendo is really killing it!

TK-661607d ago

I'd say it was inevitable. More interested to see how far off my overall prediction of 60-70 million life time is.

Spenok1607d ago

I'm expecting closer to 90-100 mil myself. Especially at this rate. I'm expecting slowdown by the end of next year due to next gen platforms. However, the Switch is mostly a portable, so I'm not sure how much they will affect it in the long run.

The only thing I can really see being affected is 3rd party support since porting down will be significant most won't want to. There's already significant downscaling for PS4/XB1 games.

This is the only thing I can think of that will really hurt sales. But at the same time, most people buy Nintendo platforms for Nintendo games. I just wonder if Nintendo can keep up their release schedule with 1st/2nd party games.

Unless they go all out on 3rd party exclusives.

TK-661607d ago

@Spenok

"I'm expecting closer to 90-100 mil myself. Especially at this rate."

Personally think that might be a bit out of reach. More than willing to be proven wrong though. Would be quite the accomplishment considering all the negativity pre-release. We were told the Switch would be dead within a few months and now those people are mysteriously silent, lol.

"The only thing I can really see being affected is 3rd party support since porting down will be significant most won't want to. There's already significant downscaling for PS4/XB1 games."

If anything it will further cement their position of being the go to system for indies, and games like Battle Chasers which sold the best on Switch. Nintendo 3rd party position among AAA's will likely only weaken marginally. Early on it'll probably remain the same and then slow down as we get closer to their next system.

andy851607d ago

There's every chance it will hit 90+ million. It's beating the PS4 sales rate for the first 2 and a bit years and remember it's not even have a price drop yet.

OMGitzThatGuy1607d ago

^
A $200 version isn't a price drop?

indysurfn1607d ago

So wait they came out 2017-03-03 and it will be three years old on 2020-03-03. So that means they did more in less then THREE years than Microsoft did in 6 years? WHAT!? Daaaaaaang!

The 10th Rider1607d ago

It will be above 50M by the end of this fiscal year. Chances are this isn't even its peak year so it could easily be past 70M by the end of March 2021.

For it to stop short of 70M, sales would have to decrease like 40% next year, 40% the year after, and then a successor would have to hit March 2022.

Sirk7x1606d ago

Few years ago everyone was saying it would be DOA. Switch has exceeded everyone's expectations.

bouzebbal1606d ago (Edited 1606d ago )

Not a big achievement when you see xbox selling max 19 consoles a week in Japan since launch, and switch selling really well..

Christopher1606d ago

"Few years ago everyone was saying it would be DOA."

Everyone? And there are people who claim DOA on almost everything.

" Switch has exceeded everyone's expectations."

Again, everyone? And, it hasn't exceeded my expectations. I still find the battery life for it to be pretty bad compared to tablets that have the same graphical capabilities. But, it admittedly does some things that I don't care for but are neat for those that do.

Unspoken1606d ago

Is there any competition in the handheld market...? Switch fills in interesting spot between full consoles and phones. I like how it's a hybrid to reach into both.

fr0sty1606d ago (Edited 1606d ago )

All that hype about the cloud making XB:O more powerful and how the One X was going to rule the generation with its 6 teraflops, and the XB:O brand teraflopped right into last place.

Is it really an achievement when Xbox One launched poorly and now doesn't have any exclusives making it worth purchasing? A real achievement would be it surpassing PS4

rainslacker1607d ago

It's on the path to at least match ps4s sales. Nintendo has done pretty well with the switch, so I'd say they accomplished something.

King_Noctis1607d ago

45 million units is not exactly a small number. It is a big achievement that that can reach that number this fast, especially compared to the Xbox One.

Ratchet751607d ago

Ps4 sales as of november 2016 were 49.5 million units.
Which means switch needs to sell around 4 million units before March to be on path to at least match ps4 sales. I think it's doable.

BizarroUltraman1607d ago

Its not even that big of a deal. Only fanboys will say so. Its a frikkin handheld thats cheaper and more appealing since its Nintendo which kids and moms love and the few men still living with mom in the basement!

darthv721607d ago

The achievement that you are missing brave is how the xbo managed to sell upwards of 45m without any major hardware issues to pad the numbers or big aaa first party titles compared to the 360. It just shows the xbo is not the failure that many proclaim it to be. It's not selling 100m like ps4 but then again its not topped out at 13m like the wiiu did either.

ScootaKuH1606d ago

Well yes it's an achievement. Let's just put aside the X1 and consider Switch on it's own merits, the numbers are still impressive. It's selling very quickly.

Kingthrash3601606d ago

Xbox had a 3 year head start, is more powerful and launched with more AAA exclusives....
This is an achievement.

Vithar1606d ago

they probably will next year, with PS5 launching next year, the sales slowed down. PS5 will rock though :)

Suave_Langosta1606d ago

People like you are so boring. You are all arm chair accountants. I sometimes think none of you number crunchers even play video games.

Be happy that Video games are expanding and Nintendo is bringing in a new power to the circle. They are all good consoles and each has their own niche. I for one love all 3 and look to get a PC after I get out of university.

Just be happy that video games are giving us new and exciting competition to push the industry to better places.

That was quick - if any console company needs a reason to reinvent itself, an ass whooping would be a good catalyst. ms better hope people enjoy subscription services next gen.

They're getting the house on it.

Congrats Nintendo.

Up next is the SNES with sales of 49.1 million units. Can the Switch surpass it by the end of the year?

Neonridr1607d ago

if it can keep up the 1 million per week then it's possible with Xmas approaching.

Suave_Langosta1606d ago

Like neo said, Christmas will have a push. I’m sure a lot will double dip for the new model. But I am happy with the first gen.

TheEnigma3131607d ago

this was bound to happen. MS lacked a good direction and focus this gen and never recovered.

trunkswd1607d ago

They will need to turn things around next generation to have a fighting chance. Having acquired so many studios in the last couple of years is a decent start. Now it is time to see games from them.

TK-661607d ago

Yeah, as a company, MS are currently where they should've been at the end of the 360s generation.

lifeisgamesok1607d ago

DRM was a very bad plan. I'm still surprised that they were that out of touch

1607d ago
Xaywhat1607d ago

@PhilSlinter - I completely agree. They tried to pull some shit and it exploded in their faces. They got confident and thought, Hey I think we can dictate stipulations on our consumer base.

It turns me off til this day and I’ve never once bought an Xbox. I’ll go with the OGs and stick with PS4+Switch combo

IamTylerDurden11607d ago

But remember all the PR from Microsoft about how XB1 is outpacing the 360?

Fans were using this rhetoric to defend XB1 up until very recently.

It seems like bs to me. 45m in over 6 years with next gen less than a year away.

The XB1 would essentially have to double its lifetime sales in order to definitively beat 360.

It's virtually impossible for XB1 to surpass the 360 at this point. Even PS4 is highly unlikely to sell 45m more units. If it did, that would put it nearly on par with the sales of PS2, which isn't going to happen. PS4 is likely to end in the 135-140 range and XB1 the 60-65m range.

The XB1 should fall well over 20 million units short of the 360 in lifetime sales when it's all said and done.

That is a far cry from "outselling the 360" and I always knew Phil and Co were full of it.

darthv721607d ago

selling 45m in 6 years with no major hardware issues that require replacements is still pretty impressive. And it did so also without the amount of 1st party software the 360 had in its run as well.

IamTylerDurden11607d ago

Darth

Impressive? No.

PS4 and Switch have impressive numbers, XB1 is on pace to do about 60-65m, which isn't bad on one hand, but on the other hand it's 20-25 million units below their last console and their two biggest competitors are each on pace to more than double them. So, it depends on how you look at it, but either way, it isn't "impressive".

We are praising companies for not having a 50% failure rate now? We are praising the fact that they had very few quality first party releases?

The XB1 numbers are ok in terms of history, but compared to their peers the numbers are terrible. When put into context. And they bulls****** everyone claiming XB1 was outpacing 360. Lies.

Muzikguy1606d ago

I agree the numbers are not impressive. Why else would MS stop reporting them after screaming them from the rooftops last gen? They've been lying so much to people over the years. That's why they won't be getting my money (among other reasons)

trunkswd1607d ago

SNES sold 49.1 million and NES sold 61.9 million.

StarLink1607d ago (Edited 1607d ago )

No one can question vgchartz, no one. Nintendo you've done good.

The Wood1607d ago

Although I believe the switch outsold the xbox I just can't rely on vg chartz. . . .sorry but their estimates just aren't reliable enough.

StarLink1607d ago

Im just being sarcastic. VGChartz has never been 100% accruate but no one will question it when it involves Xbox and if you do well be prepared.

IamTylerDurden11605d ago (Edited 1605d ago )

StarLink

Blame Microsoft for not reporting numbers. We have little else to go on. People know these numbers aren't 100% accurate, but at least they give us some context. Maybe if Microsoft shouted about sales like they did last gen we wouldn't have to use numbers from VGChartz?

JEECE1607d ago

They refer to them as estimates for a reason. Clearly there is a margin of error; these could easily be 2 million units off in either direction. Hence Switch passing Xbox on these estimates won't be too meaningful until it is ahead several million.

Also your criticism is more applicable to game sales, now that digital is such a big part of the industry. VGchartz estimates are far more reliable for consoles themselves.

LOGICWINS1607d ago

Amazing how everyone missed your sarcasm. I caught it instantly.

No Man's Sky Is Easily One Of Gaming's Greatest Comeback Stories

Despite No Man Sky's rocky launch, Hello Games managed to turn it into one of the best space exploration RPGs out there.

-Foxtrot8h ago

I hate the whole concept of "comeback story" because at the end of the day it doesn't remove the core issue we had in the first place, that we were lied to, it was disappointing and it launched with bare content to what was promised for years.

Any bad game can have a comeback story if it's supported enough after launch but for me if you launch in a terrible state then you had your chance. I can applaud you for what you've done after but at the end of the day there's not much of a choice since most gamers would blank your next product if you ditched your last game so fast, it's not about repairing the game but spending your time repairing gamers trust before you launch your next product otherwise it would be dead on arrival.

With these stories and the games being updated, the only way is up most of the time so of course it's going to improve the game and feel better over all, getting better and better as time passes. No Mans Sky, Sea of Thieves, Fallout 76 etc but then you have games like Anthem, Suicide Squad, Redfall and The Avengers where the devs just clearly moved on, now if they have another product people won't be as exited for it, I mean hell Guardians of the Galaxy was a great game but because of the Avengers it didn't help its sales since people were obviously still sour at that point.

I still think despite the improvements to games like No Mans Sky and Cyberpunk along with being better now overall the games are still not up there to what was promised and hyped as for years.

If we keep celebrating these “comeback stories” then unfortunately it only strongly supports the concept that these studios / publishers can continue to push half arsed broken products out for the sake of quick sales instead of waiting until they are fully finished. We need to condemn this awful behaviour or sadly we lose all voice and power as consumers.

Sonic18817h ago(Edited 7h ago)

I feel the same way about Cyberpunk 2077. I'm glad you mentioned that. I'm not a fan of comeback stories as well. But No man sky developer was a small indie team compared to CDPR. It's worse when it's coming from a AAA developer

Nacho_Z7h ago

"Any bad game can have a comeback story if it's supported enough after launch"

You make it sound so simple and easy. It's not. After release Hello Games poured countless hours into getting their game closer to what they originally wanted, without charging a penny to anyone. That's not normal.

The reason NMS and HG are held in such high esteem and calling them liars is a weak stance is the amount of work they've put into it, for free. They're not chasing a quick buck, they've dedicated their lives over the last few years to giving their fans the game everyone wanted.

-Foxtrot6h ago(Edited 6h ago)

They are liars though...

We are not revising history here, I'm sorry but we're not

They built this game up for years and they launched it knowing full well it wasn't up to scratch to what they originally showed off or hyped it up to be.

"They're not chasing a quick buck, they've dedicated their lives over the last few years to giving their fans the game everyone wanted"

And like I said above most of that comes from the fact that if they had just moved on straight away nobody would have supported their next game. They've washed most of that sour taste away after supporting No Mans Sky so now they are doing a new game which more people feel like they can support and get excited for.

Anyway how can you say "You make it sound so simple and easy. It's not" and then make the point that "Hello Games poured countless hours into getting their game closer to what they originally wanted, without charging a penny to anyone"

This means that if a small team like this can turn a game around then big AAA games like Suicide Squad, Redfall, Anthem and the like should have been able to do it no problem, oh but that's right they didn't want to put the time or effort into it. They can do it but some people just decide not to.

thorstein8h ago

I really enjoyed it at launch and had every trophy by August 2016.

The experience I had is no longer in the game: It was just me and my ship. It was a survival game and the feeling of loneliness in the universe was pervasive. There was no way to ruin too far from your ship and, in an emergency, you grenaded a hole in the ground to survive.

I miss that aspect, but since then, I love what they've done.

Hugodastrevas6h ago

I'd say it's THE definitive comeback story

TheGamingHounds5h ago

Final Fantasy 14 takes that one imho
