United weren't terrible. Everton just had a good game plan and stuck to it, and United couldn't make enough clear cut chances. Everton created good chances from their little possession, and when they scored defended well backs to wall. It worked well for them.
Everton have made a statement that they can go far this year.
I don't think it is cause for serious alarm for United, the real worry is the defensive injuries and wobbles (ALREADY!) which forced Valencia into right back, rusty Vidic right in there and Carrick as centre back. This just can't go on for long. 2 recognised defenders. United need Evans back fit, ASAP.
United are serial slow starters. They are the only club to win the title after losing their opener, which they have done twice. I'll be more worried if Fulham don't get beaten on Saturday.
You want a nice easy game to start and City were fortunate to draw Southampton at home, because anyone else would have probably beaten them playing the way they did.
United unfortunately just haven't woke up yet and Everton away is a nasty little starting game. But anyway, its only the first game. Looooooooooong way to go yet :)
Van Persie trade doesn't make sense? After what just 20mins? Let's wait till he's got a few games under his belt then we'll judge.
And anyway we had Valencia and Carrick in defence tonight and Vidic is clearly not match fit so no wonder the defending was all over the place, Everton are a good side and deserved the win.
hahahaa makin excuses already, uv probably already lost the title. and arsenal need to sign fellaini we need someone like him n i reckon he can play box to box, hes quality and has been for years good thing hes gettin the attention now.
hahahaa making excuses already, uv probably already lost the title. and fellaini's quality, has been for years good to see hes getting attention, hopefully arsenal sign him up can play box to box and hes better than song
Yeah I am surprised Scholes is still in the starting lineup. He should have started RVP as well. The PLs top scorer last year that you just payed 24m for should be playing. All in all though Utd didn't play bad in my opinion, Everton were just better. Fellaini and Jagielka were immense. Great start by Everton, lets hope they can keep up the pace.
Was a great match to watch but Everton deserved the win. They hit the post twice and had a couple other really good shots with good saves by De Gea. Very composed Everton
I agree if it was not for De Gea United could of lost this game by 3 or 4 goals but as ive said before De Gea is going to be a world class keeper and he showed that last he will come good for United this season.
Everton were very good last night and im not taking anything away from them but im not a worried united fan and I think Everton could finish 5th or 6th.
they deff deserved it.. no1 on our team wanted to shoot.. rooney looked rusty and should of come off for rvp earlier.. but its one game and we had the lions share of posession its not all doom and gloom yet.. other big teams will lose to this everton side
The best striking force in Europe can't score..haha....just talking shit. Seriously it's not a terrible loss for united. Everton is underrated and united couldn't start a full starting line up. Although it seemed van persie and young would've started. I'm surprised more clubs aren't going after Fellini cuz he's goooood.
United haven't been buying for the wrong positions. It just takes time to settle. How was Ferguson to know he would face a crap load of defensive injuries before the season even started?
City if anything haven't bought in the right positions or even look like they will buy right.
Mancini has still been running around talking about chasing attackers like an idiot, when it is obvious his defence is dangerously thin of backup quality.
2 defensive injuries and City can kiss their title bid goodbye. Just see. Richards is out, lose Kompany again or Lescott for any length of time and you're screwed.
Teams would love to see Savic in there for any length of time or Kolarov. Your defence could cost you title this season, unless you have another near perfect injury free year
Hardly deflecting attention at all, it isn't like i wrote a whole long post up there talking about this game is it?
Oh, I did. Don't talk rubbish corepred4 please.
A city fan was just accusing United of not buying in the right positions.
I merely found that laughable when Mancini is probably more guilty of that than anyone. He has 6 senior strikers and he was banging on about getting RvP? He hasn't got enough players he said?
He is supposedly chasing Jovetic when City clearly need defenders. His only signing this summer so far is Rodwell, who is worse than Barry, Milner, De jong and Toure in his position.
The cheek of a City fan saying United haven't bought in the right positions...
United have bought a striker, a midfielder, a winger and a full back. Pretty good spread IMO
We look very shaky in defence tonight. Vidic clearly isn't match fit and Carrick isn't strong enough to play there, which was there for all to see when Fellaini out-muscled him for the goal. Rooney and Nani were also poor by their standards, Kagawa looked sharp though and De Gea saved us a few times in the first half. All in all not a great performance, half the team looked like they were still on holiday.
Saw this same kind of thing with James McClean of Sunderland on Saturday as well. Who prints the names on these shirts? Do the clubs themselves do it or does some company do it? If it's the latter then someone there has dyslexia lol!
I don't know how other clubs do it but at LFC there is one man in the club who's been doing it for years, he presses the letters of all the players names that travel with the squad
But yeah I think all clubs should have some sort of quality control with the jerseys. Jelavic was running around in the second half without a name or number.
everton fully deserved the win probably could have been more but for de gea. fellaini was unplayable couldnt get near him he'll dominate most defenders let alone carrick.
but yet again we get sliced open too easy, same old story from last season and when we have the ball its too predictable and easy to defend against, all teams have to do is defend deep against us.
one good thing to come out of the game was kagawa, he was a class apart from any united player.
As for more important things, Fellaini was an absolute BEAST today. Good Lord! That was one of the most perfect performances from a midfielder I've seen in a VERY long time. If my memory serves me correctly, he recently signed a contract extension with Everton as well, so any possible suitors for the January/summer transfer windows will have to pay a hefty sum to get him.
DeGea also deserves special mention. He seemed like the only player for Utd. who gave a damn about playing today.
Ugly opening display by United. From the very beginning we never really got going. Besides Kagawa and Cleverly, the midfield was pitiful with horrible crosses and mistakes by Nani and Scholes didn't really push forward too much. Way too much check passing with no real progress from almost everyone. Everton totally deserved the victory and we had no answer for Fellaini with defensive marking as Carrick was getting manhandled and even Vidic is not back to full strength. We really missed Rio in this match.
Not a whole lot up front either as Rooney made countless mistakes and Welbeck was his usual clumsy self. I'm a bit surprised RVP didn't start or gets subbed in at the half as we barely even had a shot on goal at that point.
Bad result but I'm not too concerned for our Red Devils just yet. I'm used to seeing us start out the season quite rotten so we'll just have to settling into the new season. And the reds go marching on!
De Gae - Great start to the season for the lad. Every shot Everton brought at him was stopped minus the 2 shots off the bar but those would've been unstoppable had they gone in.
Evra - Made some great runs on the left sidelines and looked to have more pace than I usually give him credit for. Poor crossing and the Everton defenders got the best of him on attack as they managed to get a lot of goal kicks off of his crossing attempts. He played fairly well defensively.
Vidic - Not really the old Vidic I know and love but it takes some time to come back from injury. Besides getting outclassed by Fellaini, he seemed quite confident in the center and he even came up for attacking play.
Carrick - He was miserable in defense. There weren't too many others on the roster who would've done any better though. Fellaini just owned him (and the rest of the defense) since the starting whistle and he eventually made us pay on that corner.
Valencia - His display on defense wasn't bad but it's so disappointing that we wasn't playing right midfield where he can really make the other squad suffer. We really missed him making the runs down the sidelines but his crossing in this particular match was disappointing.
Scholes - Didn't really make much of an impact in the match. Had a few opportunities to shoot and instead played a bit too conservatively. His passing was on target but he made some reckless challenges and may have been lucky not to have seen red.
Kagawa - Him and De Gae were probably the best on the pitch for united. His ball control and forward passing was impressive and he had a nice opportunity to score but just came up short. Looking forward to seeing him in the upcoming fixtures.
Cleverly - He looked real comfortable in a midfield and was a workhorse up and down the pitch. He was clumsy with the ball at times, giving up possession but was right back at it chasing the ball down. Should've slotted home the equalizer but Jagielka made a nice block on the goal line.
Nani - Poor from the opening minute as he picked up a booking right off the bat. He just couldn't get going, especially with his extremely poor crosses and corners.
Welbeck - Really couldn't get much going. His movement, possession and passing were quite well but he didn't get a shot onto Howard or really create too much.
Rooney - A pretty disastrous return to Goodison. He had a good chance on a turnaround shot but it was right at Howard. Distin did a great job on frustrating him in the center.
subs:
Van Persie - A tough debut from the Dutchman. Already down a goal and Everton parking the bus to hold on to the lead, he really didn't get much service. He made a nice cross to Kagawa but he was inches away from tying it up. Hopefully we'll see him start the next fixture.
Young - Didn;t really make much a contribution after coming on for Nani. A few bad crosses but nothing really noticeable.
Anderson - Energetic after coming on in the last few minutes on the match. Tried a shot but it was off the mark.
I haven't got a blame game tbh first game of the season it was a hard game. Everton was class tbh we will have a better squad overall as the season progresses. We are never without an interesting season at Old Trafford.
Everton deserve there win 100%. Got to see some off what Kagawa has to offer and im impressed. We will stregthen as the season goes on and im sure we will be on the running for another exciting season so thats all im interested in. GG Everton.
man utd always struggle on their opening game. However, everton played great and they deserved to win. glad utd couldn't do anythong especially with the extra fergie time minutes.
The point was that the amount of injury time given was ridiculous. The only incident that caused a delay in the 2nd half was when Jelavic felt his hamstring, but was up and running after, what, 30 seconds. Other than that the game was pretty smooth flowing. I don't know why 4 minutes was given and that crap happens a lot with Utd, it helped them not drawing a couple games last season by knicking in a late goal
yeah, just having a lil dig at the usual fergie time amount. I'm a liverpool fan so I guess I don't have many opportunity to laugh at utd. Yeah I know LFC has sucked for years and have a bunch of above average players.
Everton deserved to win…. Fellaini Bossed the whole game. united were disgraceful to much passing from side to side, did rooney even turn up??. Kagawa and De Gea were the only two that looked like they were up for it.
Man of the match should have been De Gea, yes fellaini was good but it could have ended 4-1 if De Gea wasnt amazing. Rooney and Kagawa also played superbly. Distan was also superb
LOL guess when United lose it's a party over here. But yea the season just started, not a good start but look at a league table RIGHT NOW and tell me what you think is predictable about it.
Im still not convinced about van persie i think that 24 mil should of been used elsewhere probably on a good central defender and holding midfielder. Hope Alexander Büttner can help with the problems at back.
Man of the match? defo not RVP lol
well played Everton
Was a great match to watch but Everton deserved the win. They hit the post twice and had a couple other really good shots with good saves by De Gea. Very composed Everton
Fellaini, Jagielka, Baines are brilliant
Well done Everton and United toothless on this match. Fellaini bullied Vidic and Carrick All game.
well damn....
