Arsenal’s shock Champions League defeat to Ligue 1 side Monaco on Wednesday has been used by Lille coach Rene Girard to claim the Premier League is rubbish.
The Metro misquoted him entirely. Girard is having a dig at the superiority of the EPL pushed forward by the English media. Anytime an English team loses in Europe its seen as a massive upset. Instead of saying Arsenal lost to a decent side tonight. You dont see this narrative anywhere else really except perhaps when Barca or Real lose but it isn't widespread throughout La Liga...
The "Premier League is rubbish"... Only Chelsea realistically left in the Champions League and Everton in Europa League.
2 English clubs in both competitions. Chelsea if they beat PSG. 2 French clubs in both. PSG if they beat Chelsea. 4 German clubs in both. Dortmund still has a chance & Bayer against Atléti. 5 Spanish clubs still in both. Atléti if they beat Bayer. 6 Italian clubs still in both.
So Prem teams are below 3 of top 5 leagues in Europe and level with the worse top 5 with France. Embarrassment!
Sorry, Arsenal may be rubbish but not the PL. However, I do think Arsenal and Liverpool are great when they are, but not consistent.
