In Pole Position

A brilliant display from wonderkid Mario Goetze, allied to Roman Weidenfeller's penalty save, ensured that Borussia Dortmund returned to the top of the Bundesliga, leapfrogging Mainz whom they defeated 2-0 in the Stadion am Bruchweg. The home side were not found wanting for endeavour or desire but ultimately they came up short against Dortmund's superior individual quality.

Dortmund took the lead slightly against the run of play in the 27th minute. Niko Bungert's mistake allowed the lively Mario Goetze to dance a Halloween jig through the Mainz defence before drilling the ball home with authority past Christian Wetklo. The travelling Schwarzgelb support erupted, in contrast to Juergen Klopp who was more restrained than usual back at his old club.
